My D is deciding whether to attend one of the 2-week brass workshops at BUTI this summer. I know the BUTI YAO program is considered to be highly prestigious, but how about the workshops? Do they accept most students who apply? Are they a good learning experience? And does attending a workshop help at all in applying to YAO (or any other music festival) the next year? Thanks!
One of my kids…in 2002 and 2003…attended BUTI. A brass student. The first year, he did attend the two week brass workshop prior to his four weeks in the wind ensemble there… He felt it was terrific, and a smaller more focused group.
Will it help with YAO in subsequent years? Well…that is decided based on auditions, right? So in and of itself it probably won’t give an edge…but it might better prepare your kiddo to do a better audition in the future.
My D has attended the workshops for the past 2 years for French Horn and they focus on audition repertoire, playing with an accompanist, and sight reading. While playing in a large group helps on the performance aspect, the workshops work on helping the individual play their instrument better and work on personal techniques. My daughter came back playing much better and they have very good teachers for all groups… voice included
no they do not accept everyone… there is a waitlist for them as well… and there is no help in the future for any other program… it’s all about the audition
Thanks so much mperrine! Is it possible to PM you for a few questions off the thread? I don’t know if I can initiate a PM yet. Thanks!
I sent you a PM…you can respond to that!
