Buying a Mac

I don't know. You (among others) seemed perturbed by some laptop q's. So what about the specs?

ok so after a lot of debate i finally im like 98% sure i'll be getting an apply ibook. now i am wondering, when would be the best time to make this purchase? i want to wait as long as possible in case there's a good sale, but im a pc person and have never used a mac in my life so im concerned about waiting until the last minute because i need time to get used to it. how long does it typically take to figure out how to use macs comfortably and how to solve basic problems? thanks for any feedback.

i was a pc person too and i bought an imac a week ago. it was veeeeeeeery easy to use and i was comfortable with it within a day. if you have any problems you can always go to the support forum on apples website.

i used a pc all my life and then last year, i got an imac. i fell in love with apple and all that company had to offer. they're easier to use, and i don't have the same problems with pop ups and viruses. I recently got a powerbook, and love it just as much.

hmm ok thanks ill wait till end of august then..one more q..what are the apple laptops that come in those colors like lime green, pink, orange, etc? i was looking on the site but everything was white...

Currently the only laptops available (at least to my knowledge) are iBooks, which are white carbon fiber or something, and PowerBooks, which are silver metal of some kind.

Lisa - those are imacs, but they stopped making the colored ones in....1999 I believe. I'm sure you could still find some on ebay or the like. They are very cheap now, but still cute, in my opinion. They also had ibooks that were colored in the same fashion around that time period.

Ibooks (white) and Powerbooks (silver) are the only apple laptops on the market right now. Ibook seems like the popular choice for college students but I myself have a Powerbook. IBooks are lighter, cheaper and a bit more durable. Powerbooks have more power, and are sleeker is design, but they cost more and are more fragile.

im getting an ibook now too. i love that deal for students which gives you a free mini ipod. so awesome!!!

Yeah, I'll have to use that discount to upgrade to a regular ipod. I'll pass the mini to my sibling or something. I have a question about external drives: Do you think it would be wise to get the superdrive or just get a combo external drive? I've the superdrive isn't really that speedy.

Get an external drive - it's awesome! That way, it's easy to hook up hard drives with your friends or roommates and swap movies, music and games.

My powerbook is modified in a lot of ways, and I recently had an 80 gig internal drive put into it. My external is abour 200 gigs and I have a ton of music and films, with a lot of room left over.

Wow - I swear, I'm not a geek. If any of you saw me in my sweet metallic flip flops, you would think I had never used a computer.

I'm too lazy to read the whole thread. I hope you're not getting a mac because of it's design.... If you like unix so much OSX is based on it then why don't you try linux? Download a knoppix live cd free and then try that out, without having to install linux. It's an awesome OS, and there are so many free packages for it. You can get a nice cheap laptop and run Linux on it. It's a nice solution for the college student that wants to go the legal route and not pirate software. I don't care what you say, but Macs are overpriced. That doesn't make them better than a top of the line pc. Just curious.. what exactly do you like about macs? Pretend the mac was in a dell laptop shell.

Thanks for answering my question. Anyone else have a valid answer to my question?

So people suggest getting an Ibook with a combo drive then purchasing an external drive as opposed to the Ibook with the superdrive? I am purchasing one soon so advice concerning this matter would be extremely helpful.

If so, which external drive for an Ibook would you suggest? How much would it cost?

a mac in a dell shell would be ugly, im not going to lie. i love the look of apple products from the laptops to the ipods. im a female who happens to have an obsession with things like are compact and funky, much like myself.

honestly, i have never had a problem with either my imac or powerbook. i never get pop ups, my computer never freezes or crashes. i prefer mac's operating systems and just recently obtained 'tiger' which is excellent and includes many awesome features.

apples can be overpriced - hence why i will get my canon digital camera online and not from the apple store. i got a really neat deal on my powerbook. its not something thats available with student discount or anything like that, it was a situation that i was lucky to stumble upon. i purchased my powerbook for far less than it was retailed for. i probably wouldn't have had the money for the ones in the stores, but otherwise, i would have gotten an ibook which are only 999 for the 12 inch.

Hmm then how about a windows xp machine in an apple ibook shell? :p Just collecting some information here ^_^

Ah sorry, can't edit my above post yet. I'd like to mention that I have no spyware\adware\virus problems on my Windows XP machine. I use no firewall either, just a simple anti-virus program. My computer has also been on for 2 weeks without crashing and at one time for nearly 5 weeks without crashing. I don't understand the problem with windows, although linux is interesting.

personally i like the powerbook shell. muaha. but yeah, ill answer the question.

the family computer is a pc with windows os x. i use it sometimes and am on it now. it gets the job done, but mac's operating systems are just...a little extra.

tiger, apple's newest operating system is really quite great. theres a little bar you can drag down in the top right hand corner, where you can search a keyword and have all bookmarks, documents and emails you have containing that word pop up in seconds. if you place your mouse in the bottom left hand corner, your widgets will appear, which are all these handy little extra tools. I have an airplane tracker to locate planes and book flights, language translator, weather report, movie theatre look-up device and tv guide to name a few.

Of course it's all up to you :p Linux is highly customizable too and you can get lots of need things for it. I just don't think I could bring myself to pay that much for a mac where I could buy a laptop at least two times faster at the same price.

totally understandable.

Hey Izziebear can you give some insight into my question regarding whether to purchase an Ibook with Combo Drive and then later purchasing an external dvd burner?

Or just purchasing an Ibook with a Superdrive now?
