I am a sophomore pusuing an industrial engineering degree. I have heard so much from others as well as cc about how it helps for engineers to know how to program and what not. What are the things that I named above and what do they entail? I know these things seem to be more for computer science or CE majors, but I have heard that a class in C++ or teaching yourself how to work a specific program or two can make all the difference in making yourself more knowledgable in your field, even more attractive to employers. Which of these is more important to learn (if I could teach myself)?

Google is your friend. He will get you started. Oh Google…I do love thee!

Ask your classmates about upcoming coursework. There may be a project class with integrated programming needs. I don’t know much about IE, but it’s hard for me to imagine any engineering program these days not including at least some programming.
