Do any current/former students know where the cable connection is for the rooms in Lupton? Assume it would be the same as other BQ dorms. Trying to see if we have the right length of cable to take or if we need to wait and buy it there. Thanks in advance!
I’m guessing you mean tv coax … In my son’s room the cable outlet was on the back wall (near window), the ethernet port was on the front wall (near the door). We needed a relatively short coax (6 ft I think), it of course depends on where they put the tv. But we needed a few long ethernet cables since the wifi wasn’t wonderful.
Thanks, vandyman! Yes, the question was about coax for tv but the ethernet info is also helpful. She used ethernet on The Commons and said it was better than wireless–especially when she signed up for classes (she’s one that liked to sign on right on time to try to get everything she wanted and she said the wireless connection was noticeably slower).
DoreMom, My apologies, I was confusing my memory of the freshman & soph dorm rooms. Both the coax and ethernet ports were by the door in Lupton. But the boys had their tv & bd player right there, so the 6ft coax cable was correct. As was the long ethernet cable info. I was just misremembering the location of the tv & its port.
Yes, despite the grand claims of the IT people, campus wireless is generally pretty bad. BTW, we also found that having an ethernet switch was necessary to hook everything up to the network. (I recommend getting a 8-port gigabit switch from Amazon, and cables to go with that.)
Thanks for the followup, vandyman. My daughter remembered visiting Lupton last year and said the tv was on the countertop by the mirror. She thought that the coax outlet would be there but I think it must have just been a long and creatively strung cable line.
Are all of the dorm rooms wired for Ethernet cables? My daughter will be in a Mayfield. She complains about the wifi so I would love to send her with a cable to use when wifi isn’t working.
Perhaps someone who lived there knows for certain. The VU website indicates that there is one port per suite or room so there might just be one for the residents to share.
From http://it.vanderbilt.edu/distributedtech/resnet/
"Many university services are available on the Vanderbilt University network (VUnet), and more are added every year. ResNet provides at least one active data port for each residential room or suite and extensive wireless coverage. These continuous connections are fast, reliable, and offer students access to VUnet from the comfort of their rooms. ResNet is sponsored by Housing and Residential Education and Vanderbilt Information Technology.
Each student room is provides a cable television port and an ethernet data connection to the campus network. In addition, wireless network service is present in all residence halls and student rooms. These services are provided at no extra cost."
I believe that all rooms have a single ethernet port. You can detailed info on the various dorms by doing a search. Here’s what I found about Mayfield: http://www.vanderbilt.edu/ResEd/main/mayfield-place/
