I saw this on wikipedia and had some questions.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Air_Force_Academy_Cadet_Insignia

How do you make rank? Is it helpfull to know the rank before you go? What do the diamonds and stars mean? Is it hard to make rank?

Rank is by class as it shows on the site. The specific ranks among classes for instance C/1st Lt or C/Capt depend on your position in the squadron or if you are on group or wing staff. Squadron commander will be a C/LtCol as where the squadron sheduling officer will be a C/1st Lt. To get the jobs in the squadron, you interview with your AOC/AMT/SquadCom.

I wouldn't worry about memorizing anything before you go, you will get more than enough of that while you are there.

Thanks TexasFalcon, What does AMT stand for? I was looking at my Catalogue and they listed Cross Country as an intramural and intercollegiate, if you can't make the intercollegiate do you get to choose your intramural activity?

AMT is Academy Military Trainer, like the AOC but usually a MSgt. Yes, you get to sort of choose you intramural. You try out for some that are competitive to be on (like Ultimate Frisbee), if there is a team with not enough players, freshman will get transferred to make the team.

You really should not worry about rank before you come here.

Here's a helpful hint for BCT that doesn't require memorizing all the ranks ahead of time and shouldn't be too hard to remember: The more chevrons or bars, the higher the position of the cadet. You'll learn the specifics once you get there. Until then, spend time preparing physically as well as enjoying your civilian life. ;)

Yeah, don't worry about any of that stuff before you get to USAFA...it's not worth it. Just chill out and have fun senior year without failing out of high school. You'll be here soon enough :-) ...its really not that bad
