Hi, I am transferring to UC Irvine this fall. For financial aid, I got ~$9K for my university grant, and got ~$12K for my Cal Grant A. Can I only pick one or the other, or can both apply?
For UC, both can apply. It should be clear in your aid letter. If you are low income, UC will give university grants to help meet need.
@BrownParent So essentially, I can get ~$21K in grants this year?
yes. Is that what your aid package says?
@BrownParent My university financial aid award letter says nothing about Cal Grant anywhere. The letter includes only the university grant. The Cal Grant is awarded on a separate site .

Well then, in this case I can’t say. Do you have unmet need in your award letter or not? The recent award letters I have seen show expected cal grant and the university grant. Here is an actual sample from last year:
Gift Aid
Undergraduate Scholarship $7,986.00
Estimated Cal Grant A $12,192.00
Federal Pell Grant $5,730.00
Federal SEOG Grant $400.00
Total Gift Aid $26,308.00
Work Study Eligibility $2,950.00
Federal Perkins Loan $1,500.00
Federal Subsidized Direct Loan $3,500.00
Grand Total $34,258.00
