Is SLO a “commuter school?” S is out of state and wants full resident college experience, not a commuter school. He visited SLO and has researched it and has been favorably impressed. Another CC thread mentioned that CS campuses are typically commuter schools. I didn’t know about this potential drawback, though.

Cal Poly SLO is not a commuter school. It is located about 3 hours north of LA and 3 hrs south of the Bay Area and a couple of hours from the central valley. I’m sure some people go home on weekends but I think it is not the norm. It’s a great school and a great college town. Good luck!

I went to open house last weekend and what a great place. Almost every freshman lives on campus and with the addition of Poly Canyon Village(awesome place) most of the sophomores also live on campus. If I were to guess I would say that less than 10% of the students commute.

Thanks very much. Makes me feel better. Hopefully he will be accepted. Other than no real big time sports, and distance from home (east coast) Cal Poly seems like a perfect fit for him. Seems there is enough school spirit even without the big time sports. No big time sports may be better anyway - now he can still root for Penn State (my alma mater).

There are a lot of SoCal natives that go to school here that are bandwagon USC football fans. Who knows… your son might be brainwashed into dropping his allegiance to JoePa for the Trojans!!

The CSU system is very commuter-centric, but Cal Poly SLO really separates itself from the other CSU’s. Most people don’t even consider it part of that system.
