Cal Poly Pomona is one of my top choices. What are my chances for joining the Comp Sci Program?

I realize that Computer Science is an impcated major here, so I’m not so sure about my chances. I never took school seriously because I never truly thought about my future. I slacked off in high school (particularly in math) but I’m willing to redeem myself, work hard, and improve for college.

Cumulative GPA: 3.9 Weighted, 3.5 Unweighted

10 AP classes, including this year (the rest are mostly honors)

SAT: 1030 (560CR + 470M) I realize that my math is insanely low and will try to improve it this year.

Unfortunately, my highest level of math is Algebra 2. I’m currently taking AP Stats instead of Trigonometry/Pre-Calc because I was unsure on what I wanted to major in. Will this affect my chances in any way?

Can I take a math class during the summer at a CC so I don’t have to take it in CPP? Will this satisfy the requirements for the four year pledge? (I have to be eligible for MAT 214 in order to pledge.)

Calculate your CSU GPA, see link: <a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;
Your GPA is competitive, but your SAT Math, like you stated is something to worry about since CS requires a lot of math. Also not even having been exposed to at least pre-calculus in your Senior year will be a definite disadvantage when most CS majors would probably have at least pre-calculus but more likely AP Calculus AB under the belt. You will be expected to take a Math Placement test prior to enrolling at CPP and if you do not pass, you will be required to take some remedial math.
Taking a math class in the summer at the local CC will definitely help you but it not allow to skip the 3 quarters of calculus required for the major. See link: http://catalog.csupomona.edu/preview_entity.php?catoid=5&ent_oid=1631&hl=“CS”&returnto=search</a></p>

CPP: High Match/Low Reach

Assuming you checked all the a-g boxes, you should be in good shape for CPP. I’d sit for the SAT again though. A 3.9 GPA suggest you could/should score better than a 1030 - if not, perhaps your are being unrealistic about CS as a major.

@NCalRent You’re definitely right, I could’ve done better. I completely regret my decision for pretty much winging the SAT and did not take it seriously. I got hit with a sudden reality that I have to face and I’m planning to score around at least 1200.

Math 214 I believe is Calculus of multiple variables. I don’t think you can catch up with just one summer of classes. Also, if you still can raise that SAT score because compsci is impacted. Also, when you hit the real cs major classes you’re going to have to push yourself like never before. I suggest you start doing that early.
