I’m a high school senior right now and I committed to Cal Poly SLO for Bmed. I’ve heard that Cal Poly engineers do not have a lot of trouble finding jobs after they graduate. However, I’ve also heard that to get a job in biomedical engineering you need a masters degree, and that its a good idea to major in a different kind of engineering, like chemical or mechanical, and do your grad work in biomedical engineering. I want to do SLO’s 4+1 program and get my masters in 5 years. Provided I get a solid GPA and do summer internships/coops would I be able to find a job without too much difficulty after doing both my undergrad and graduate work in biomedical? or would it be smarter to do something else?
my brother was BMED and wished he was mechanical. I am AERO and would choose between mechanical or electrical if i had to redo it. mainly because specific engineering degree types like BMED or AERO pigeon hole you into a specific subset of engineering that you have to work out of if you wanted to change direction; MECH or EE is broad and you choose which pigeon hole you want to go into.
If you don’t mind me asking did your brother have a hard time finding a job after he graduated?
yes he did. he went to UC Davis and graduated with a 3.68, had research done while he was there with professors and worked as an RA the last 2 years. he’s currently employed in a BMED company but its currently on a contractual basis and not long term; he doesn’t know when the contract ends either. he’s looking for more long term positions. i’m trying to convince him to just get his MS in Mech to open more opportunities.
