Trying to decide between two engineering majors offered at CalPoly SLO. I notice GENE (General Engineering) is not ABET accredited, does that hurt this program? Also it looks like MATE (Materials) is a small department, ~150 students. Does anyone know how big/small GENE is? Also does anyone have insight into if either of these majors are impacted, is it easy to graduate in 4 years, teacher:student ratio? Thanks in advance for your answers!

All majors in Cal Poly are impacted. The impaction is even higher in the college of engineering. GENE is purposely non-ABET because Cal Poly wanted to have more freedom in structuring the program. GENE is small too, but I don’t recall how small. They are closely linked to Biomedical engineering.

If you pass all your classes the first time around and you don’t take time off to do a 6 months co-op, you can graduate in 4 years.

What do you think my chances are with a 4.33 GPA and 1390 SAT w/out writing (2130 with)?

GENE had an undergraduate enrollment of 171 in 2012, while MATE had an enrollment of 173, so pretty much the same size. The largest departments are EE (624) and ME (985). Biomedical engineering had 411 students in 2012.

Here are the average stats for freshmen who applied last year in engineering:

COLLEGE APPLIED SELECTED GPA ACT SAT1
Engineering 12,991 3,781 4.08 31 1388
