Cal Poly Slo vs UW-Madison for International

Hey,

I’m an international student who has been accepted to Cal Poly Slo. It’s one of many top chocies with it’s low CoA and it’s great job oppurtunities. But, how good is it for internationals? Since it’s a regional university, I assume it won’t be well known outside of the US.
I’m torn between Cal Poly and UW-Madison. A few points to note are:
I’ve been accepted to Bioengineering in both these schools, but I plan to change my engineering major.
I plan on pursuing a masters degree as well.

So, which of these universities should I choose?

@notasuperhero Hi! I’m an international student who got accepted into both of these universities as well (for Computer Science). I’m leaning more on cal poly because cali is the best state to get tech jobs plus the tuition is affordable.

If you want international recognition, then UWis is a better option for you. But if you’re interested in pursuing masters, then I think where you did bachelors from won’t matter when you’re looking for jobs. So if I were in your shoes, then I would choose Cal Poly, because it’s around 10k cheaper, plus the weather is nice and job opportunities (as you already mentioned) are excellent for a person with just a bachelors degree.

Can poly is terrific for its location and offers superb academics.
Its one big downside is that it refuses to evaluate foreign credentials, they only accept AP, so even if you had 2-3 years of calculus you have to go back to Calc 1.
U Wisconsin is located in one of the best college towns in the US and it’s highly reputable for CS. However the weather is likely to be a shock !

UW doesn’t really have that big of name recognition abroad either, but it definitely is more well known than Cal poly inside the country. If you want to get a nice Silicon Valley job though, I highly recommend Cal Poly. I recently got an offer from Apple as a Mechanical Engineer at one of their weeklong, “networking” sessions that have throughout the year at the campus. This isn’t just specific to Apple either, Google, Northrup Grumman, and Amazon all also hold weeklong session with smaller companies doing daylong sessions through the year.

For grad school, either one will do the same for you, it just depends on your GPA, GRE, and relatable experience in undergrad.

I’m interested in ChemE, BioE and Materials Science. I’ve heard that there are plenty of jobs for these majors in Minneapolis and Chicago. Is it the same near San Luis Obispo?

Cal Poly doesn’t offer ChemE, so that may simplify your decision.

There’s a couple of ME firms and many more Civil engineering firms. There’s an Amazon office and few other software firms as well. Silicon Valley is also only 3 hours away as well and LA is also chock full of jobs for those majors.

@tan075 have you decided where to go?

@idstudent Yes, I decided on Cal Poly

Can you explain your rationale?
