Cal poly vs ucla

Aloha~ My daughter was recently admitted oos from Hawaii to numerous colleges( UC Davis, UCLA, cal poly, UCSB, SD state, and UCSC)…she never thought she would get in ucla but I’m a single mom. It’s so $$. She’s star stuck but UC davis was her dream school for envionmental policy before ucla. She got stuck at lax flying back and took am uber to tour ucla and loved it~ I’m thinking the prestige. We have seen the others. I can afford cal poly barely~ and I think I love the student: faculty ratio learn by doing etc… she comes from a small IB school on a community of 40,000. Any insights? Mahalo~

You said you can barely afford CPSLO which has a COA of 40K for OOS. UCLA is 60k. Can you afford the extra 80k for 4 years if she went to UCLA?

Only with parent plus loans or my relocation with my company to California~

What if you get sick? Those loans have to be paid.
Why would she apply to those expensive schools if she knows you can’t afford them?

Actually with the UC tuition increase, all the UC’s will be closer to $65K/year unless she received Regents or any merit scholarships. What can you afford to pay without huge loans?

She got the Provost ( 14 k) at Davis and 11 K from ucla. 2800 from cal poly. I can pay 12k and my parents 12k. Still seems like a lot. She applied because she was in love with those schools despite me urging her about the reality of the money. I know it’s probably a bad decision financially.

Cal Poly SLO looks like the most reasonable option and they have a good environmental program but even with you and your parents contribution, her $2800 from SLO and taking out a student loan of $5500, you still have a short fall around $13K. Are you willing to take out a parent plus loan for $13K/year and this does not include airfare home during breaks?? What are her options in Hawaii? The best gift any parent can give their student is a debt free Undergrad.

She’s star stuck ucla. She got into UVM with a nice package.,I have family in Vermont and she was awarded a sweet deal~ but before she commits was just wanting other input. Hawaii is not an option academically. She worked so hard ~ this was more a question. Is the debt worth it?

I think cal
Poly for 13k a year and travel would be the compromise between UVM
And ucla. Just in a tough place. Thanks!
