Cal poly

Ok, so my act score(English and math averaged) is a 30, but I’m not really sure about my gpa.

Since I took algebra in middle school, I’m also calculating classes from 7th and 8th.

So, these are my grades:
7th grade(algebra 1) B and B ( 2 semesters)
8th grade(geometry) B and B
9th: B, B, C, A,B(classes that satisfy a-g)
9th: B,C,A,A,A
10th:C,A,A,A,A
10th:B,B,B,A,A
11th:A,A,A,A,B
11th:A,A,A,A,A

Can u calculate these grades using the gpa calculator that cal poly slo uses? I’m pretty sure they use a weighted capped gpa, but I want to be sure they don’t use unweighted? Do they?

Oh, and I did 2 yrs of Spanish for 9th and 10th, and I did a year of Spanish in middle school. I don’t want that year calculated bc I already did 2 years in high school. Will they calculate that anyway or they won’t count it?

Do you have at least 8 semesters of UC weighted classes in 9-11? If so take the above

(Cs x 2, Bs x 3, As x 4 + 8) / total

Just use the Roger Hub UC GPA calculator, plug in the #'s of A’s,B’s and C’s. If you took 8 semesters of UC approved AP/IB/DE or Honors courses in 10-11th then add the # of honors points of 8 or less.

A year of Spanish in Middle School along with 2 years in HS should count for 3 years. Did you reach Spanish 3 in HS?

thanks for the gpa calc help.
So, I also calculated my MCA, and it was like a 3,800. I’m not applying for engineering or anything like that, I’m applying for liberal arts major. Do u think I have a good chance into getting into a liberal arts(communications) major, and do u know the avg MCA for liberal arts majors accepted?

Communication majors in the School of Liberal Arts have around a 15-16% acceptance rate. With your MCA below 4000, it might be a tough admit. No reason not to apply, but make sure you have several backup schools on your list.
There is no average MCA’s for most majors, just not enough data collected to date. Engineering is usually around 4700+ but since each major has a different acceptance rate, it will take time to come up with good numbers.

Sorry, actually I forgot to put the ECs in, so my MCA probably is 4100. Would that be still tough
for communications?

Still a tough admit with a low acceptance rate but definitely worth an application. Just have a variety if schools on your list.

So would a MCA score of about 4500 be secure enough for communications?
Sorry, I just want to make sure that the highest MCA score I can get is reassuring enough to get accepted into this major.
I forgot to add pts for one of my parents not graduating high school

No guarantees, since it will be dependent upon how competitive this year’s applicant pool will be. SLO is all about the numbers and since they are no longer offering Early Decision, the applicant pool can be very competitive.

Here are 2 posts with MCA numbers for communications:

Accepted Early Decision
communication studies
Gpa: 3.5
Act: 25
MCA: 4070

Accepted Regular Decision
Communications
MCA Score: 4400

Oh ok thanks.
Btw, do u know how would CP check volunteer hours?
Would they just believe me if I put on my app that my parents either went to college or did not go to college, or would they try to verify that

You should look at the existing very detailed thread for computing the MCA:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/1694769-confused-about-mca-score.html

In particular, note that Cal Poly SLO does use 9th grade.

You self-report your volunteer hours based on a honor system. EC’s count for only 10% of the MCA score, so not a huge impact. For EC’s, if you have a job that directly pertains to your major, this would be where you would get the most MCA points in the EC area.

Can you study/practice the ACT over the summer and take again in October (or whatever the fall dates are this year)?Recalculate the MCA to see what happens if you bring up the ACT by a point or two.

You can only get extra points for each parent that didn’t graduate high school. Not college.

As @MLM said, it isn’t about first generation going to college. It’s about having a parent without a high school degree. When you report something ALWAYS assume it will be verified. Even if it isn’t, it will keep you from stooping to dishonesty to achieve a goal.
