Which one is better in general? Why?
Which one is better in Engineering? Why?
Which one is better in Political Science? Why?
Which one is better in Science(Biology, Physics, Chem)? Why?
I keep hearing that Stanford is even better than MIT at Engineering and that annoys me...

Not this again.

unlimitedx you seem rather downcast today.

Stanford is better than Cal in everything. 'Nuff said.

So true!!!

except football. Lynch for Heisman!

"Which one is better in general? Why?"
Cal. Because I said so.
"Which one is better in Engineering? Why?"
Cal. Because Mr. T said so.
"Which one is better in Political Science? Why?"
Cal. Eat your Wheaties, that's why.
"Which one is better in Science(Biology, Physics, Chem)? Why?"
Cal. Stanfordium?

Which one is better in general? Why?

For undergrad, probably Stanford. For grad, about the same.

Which one is better in Engineering? Why?

They're both pretty strong.

Which one is better in Political Science? Why?

Dunno.

Which one is better in Science(Biology, Physics, Chem)? Why?

They're also both strong in the sciences so it's hard to say.

I keep hearing that Stanford is even better than MIT at Engineering and that annoys me...

Probably not although the difference is minimal. And don't be such a MIT fanboy. There can be more than one school with a strong engineering program.

They're about the same...Stanford's probably better for undergrad if you like the smaller class sizes, but once u get to ur upperdivision courses, all classes are smaller. The only thing is that Cal has these annoying 'weeder' courses.

I guess the real question should be which has the better students? Overall, that would have to be Stanford because since they are a private university, they're not restricted to getting 90% of their students from California. But when you look at the Best frome each schools, then that's where it gets tough to determine. At berkeley, the bottom of the barrel sucks so much it's shameful, but the top is very impressive.

Berkeley's political science programs basically dominate Stanford's.

"At berkeley, the bottom of the barrel sucks so much it's shameful, but the top is very impressive"

What's the bottom of the barrel? The people that came in with the bottom 20 percent stats or the people with good stats but suck once they get here? Because I'm willing to bet there are people at stanford that came in with great stats but turn out to be horrible. The differnce between the two school is that Cal weeds theirs out while stanford continues to give theirs As (so it doesn't hurt their rep).

Harvard-Yale-MIT-Columbia-Stanford-Berkeley are known as the best univs in my family :p

Berkeley. MIT & Berkeley are known as the top Engineering Schools in my family - My uncle (who is most brilliant within our family circle) got a PhD in naval engineering(?) in Berkeley and now he works at Top Submarine Research Center :p

English(?), Chemistry, Engineering: Berkeley
Biology, Law, Business: Stanford

Overall, I think they are comparable- Both are top univs. in the US

Academically, they are about the same. Some departments are stronger at Cal, others stronger at Stanford. On balance, Cal might come out on top actually.

The "better undergraduate" angle is mostly BS, class sizes are pretty close:

-Stanford offers a more relaxed student experience due to its greater grade inflation, but Cal has relaxed its grading policies and that difference is now only accute in majors like EECS and premed.

-Stanford offers more social cachet and better, easier placement. Most Cal grads also do well, but they have to work harder to get there.

-Cal offers a more stimulating environment. More lively, close to SF yet still a college town, as opposed to isolated. Almost all of the Stanford students live on campus, their experience is more insular. Cal has more of a college town feel, with great food, shops, more venues for extracuricular activities and more diversity.

Here is a Stanford student experience that illustrates my point:

My daughter is about to graduate this spring from Stanford. I asked her this question as she approaches her final quarter. Overall, she loved Stanford, but she thought Palo Alto was a boring, upscale, gentrified town not really suited to college student life, that there were some very, very, very driven people at the school who placed grades and accomplishments above learning, the school population, while ethnically diverse, is not socio-economically diverse--lots of rich kids of all colors, and the ethnic/racial groups can be cliquey. Her desire to go to a prestigious medical school has been pretty much eliminated after going to Stanford. Now, she wants to be around more relaxed students whose identity is not so tied into the brand-name of the school.

While US News has its flaws, its rankings by department are somewhat useful:

Stanford Rankings:

Best Engineering Programs Where the Highest Degree is a Doctorate

Engineering program rank: 2
Aerospace rank: 6
Biomedical rank: 17
Chemical rank: 5
Civil rank: 6
Computer rank: 2
Electrical rank: 2
Environmental rank: 1
Industrial/Manufacturing rank: 9
Materials rank: 6
Mechanical rank: 2

Berkeley rankings:

Best Business Programs and Departments

Business program rank: 3
Accounting rank: 7
Real Estate rank: 2
Entrepreneurship rank: 6
Finance rank: 4
International Business rank: 5
Management rank: 3
Management Information Systems rank: 11
Marketing rank: 4
Production/Operations Management rank: 8
Quantitative Analysis/Methods rank: 5
Supply Chain Management/Logistics rank: 15

Best Engineering Programs Where the Highest Degree is a Doctorate

Engineering program rank: 2
Aerospace rank: 17
Biomedical rank: 13
Chemical rank: 2
Civil rank: 1
Computer rank: 3
Electrical rank: 3
Environmental rank: 4
Industrial/Manufacturing rank: 4
Materials rank: 3
Mechanical rank: 3
Nuclear rank: 2

While these are all undergraduate rankings, the engineering ranking is likely very strongly influenced by the schools' graduate programs. Also, it might be helpful to keep in mind that Stanford has no undergraduate business program.

This is US News? What year?

Which one is better in general? Why?
Stanford--Prestige, its a private school
Which one is better in Engineering? Why?
Berkeley--Better and more prestigious departments
Which one is better in Political Science? Why?
Toss up, Stanford probably because of overall prestige
Which one is better in Science(Biology, Physics, Chem)? Why?
Berkeley-Better departments

US News, 2006. 2007 is not yet out.

Since my parents bought the subscription for it, I thought I might as well use it.

If they are so close to each other, why people go to Stanford receive a louder applause than the one go to Cal?
