Hey everyone,
I was accepted in the three aforementioned schools and I am curious about the most optimal school for a philosophy major. I am aware UCSD is not in the same ranking league for philosophy and I even emailed Brian Leiter for the LeiterReport blog and he told me go for Cal and UCLA not UCSD.

Anyone else having the same trouble deciding or any other phil majors at those schools who can chime in?

Cal and UCLA supposedly both have great Phil programs! I remember people on CC mentioning that Philosophy at Cal is super hard, though (I could be mistaken, correct me if I am, people).

I also heard that philosophy at Cal is very hard.

Well if you choose Cal, make sure you’re going for the education, not the name :)

In general, you’re probably better off going to cal or ucla if you want the name and/or are interested in the more “typical” (?) areas of philosophy or if you’re not quite sure what direction you want to take after getting your BA. I want to go to UCSD though, since they are actually ranked higher than cal or ucla in the fields I’m most interested in (Phil of science/Phil of physics etc). I would say, look at the faculty (this can change though) and the courses each school offers and make your decision from there. Also, the name might matter to you a little more if you’re planning to go to grad school, and that’s ok. ;)
