CalArts acceptances

Acting720 - I spoke to the admissions office late last week and was assured that they are NOT finished - but hoped to wrap up by April 1. Surely we won’t have to wait that long!! Remind me, did your son feel good about his audition (asked to do breathing exercise, got card, etc.)?

MOD: Yes, he felt great about the audition. Did the whole extra routine with breathing, card, and so on. He talked with her about the school and we had already made a visit to the school last May so he told her about that. She was very happy he had visited, etc. He felt great when he came out of the audition! We will see. :)

Acting720- great, my D also felt very positive about her audition. Keep us posted when you hear something and I will do the same. I am remaining hopeful:)

:( and  My son received this today:

I regret to inform you that, after a thorough evaluation of your application, we are unable to offer you admission to the Acting program at the California Institute of the Arts for the Fall 2013 semester.

Although we are unable to offer you admission at this time, the Review Committee has asked that you be made aware of their interest in your work and their hope that you will consider reapplying after an additional year of artistic growth. Please understand that the admissions process requires that very difficult choices be made. Under no circumstances should our decision be understood as a reflection on your ability or potential. CalArts is dedicated to offering small classes with professional artists/instructors, and the large number of applications we receive each year makes it impossible to accommodate every talented applicant.

New admissions and financial aid applications will be available in October. We hope that you will choose to reapply. If you do, we highly recommend that you speak with an Admissions Counselor for the Acting program to discuss your portfolio development. We thank you for applying, wish you success and personal fulfillment with your work, and look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Sincerely,

Molly Ryan
Director of Admissions

I’m so sorry Acting720 :frowning: that sucks! I was so hoping your son would get accepted…

I’m sorry Acting720. That stinks! :(

Did anyone else’s rejection letter suggest re-auditioning? That sounded fairly positive to me. Like they really think he might be good there with a little artistic maturity. I like that it ended with them hoping to hear from him soon. Thoughts on this anyone? What do these sorts of letters mean?

These are similar to UNCSA letters, and you should know that like that program, these letters are not sent to everyone. That is something to take to heart…

Acting720: I am sorry you didn’t get the news you had hoped for, but I think the invitation to reapply sounds promising. As I have mentioned before, my D is doing a second round of auditions as a transfer student, and the additional year of training has made all the difference! Even though she has several other offers, CalArts is her dream school and we are still waiting, waiting to hear… Next year is always a possibility!

Thank you, photomom and MOD. MOD, did she know that she wanted to re-audition this year from the beginning or did she just not ‘fit’ where she landed last year? I am trying to decide what his next move might be.

Without any first-hand knowledge, i have to think that the letter is a wonderful testimony to your son’s potential and something to take seriously. Is he interested in reapplying?

acting720, I’m just popping in to say I’m sorry your son didn’t get the news he wanted. However, I do think that extra sentence encouraging him to re-apply is very special. I’m not familiar with how CalArts handles admissions (do they have a waitlist?) but perhaps he might send the admissions person an email expressing his continued interest and (if it would still be his first choice) open the conversation that he would really appreciate them keeping his name in contention if they should have a last minute opening for next year.

He is on his way home from tech rehearsal, but I think we should have a serious conversation about it. It is definitely his #1 school. They do have a waitlist, I think, but the letter reads like they would prefer him to ‘get a little older and wiser’ so to speak, or at least that’s how I read it. Thanks for your encouragement, everyone.

acting720: if it makes you feel any better, there are lots of older kids in the BFA this year (some in their mid-20’s). From the letters I’ve seen on Tumblr, your son’s letter seems “special”. Having taken a gap year myself and knowing how much I’ve grown during this time, I would totally recommend it if your son wants CalArts that bad.

acting720, that letter sounds very positive-- I doubt that such special interest was expressed to a large number of the students who were rejected. Although rejection is painful and disappointing, the letter itself is very encouraging.

Acting720: my D did not get into her top choice last year, but was accepted into a solid program which she accepted thinking it might still be a good fit. She is not unhappy where she is but wanted to try again for several of the top schools. She just wants the BEST training because she hopes to make a career of this. Ironically she did not audition at CalArts last year, but added it to the list this year because of its strong reputation and unique approach. After auditioning and shadowing, she is absolutely convinced its the place for her. We are anxious to see if they agree. In the course of this year my D has learned a lot about the environment she believes will best grow her as an artist.

After some discussion, he has decided to call Calarts to get their feedback on what to work on, go to one of the schools he was accepted to and then audition again for Calarts again next year. He might decide by audition time next year that he’d rather stay put, but he might be like MOD’s daughter and want to give it another shot. I am anxious to hear how things turn out for her MOD. Keep us posted!

Still no decision today…

MKSP: what is today’s count in the Facebook group?

Almost the same thing: 17 confirmed, 9 unknown.

Another day of silence…
