Calc 1 vs Calc 2

I'm an incoming freshman planning to apply for either Ross or the ppe major. I took Calc ab senior year and am fairly certain that I got a 5 on the ap test. Should I jump straight into Calc 2 or should I stick with Calc 1 again? Also I would consider myself to be a fairly strong math student. Thanks for all the help!

By Calc 1 you mean 115? Don’t bother, that’s just a waste. If you were thinking an honors course like 185 or 295 that would be good. If you just wanna go with the standard series, take 116, not 115.

For what it’s worth, PPE sounds way cooler than Ross.

Yes I’m debating between calc 115 and 116

To give my honest opinion, I would stick with 115 your first semester. Many students find Umich math very difficult and are not prepared for what it takes to get an A. Taking 115 your first semester will not slow you down at all with your pre-req’s and it will give you a much easier transition

Check out Math 175: Intro to Cryptology. It’s proof-based, which adds more value in the long run compared to just retaking Calc I. It’s honors, so the curve is rather generous, and Professor Stover has to be my favorite prof after my freshman year. Really interesting and great class.

Take 116. IMO, 115 would be a waste of your time. 116 is tough, but everybody sucks at the tests, so you’ll be okay

fwiw my son came into UM having taken both calc ab and bc. (As you know, calc bc is 50% a repeat of calc ab.) He got 5’s on both the AP calc ab and bc exams, and UM gave him credit for calc 1 & 2. He was advised by another UM student to skip calc 1 and 2 if he could, because they were hard & a lot of work. He started off at UM in Math 216 (differential equations), then discrete math, did fine although both also were a lot of work. His program (engineering) advised him to take calc 3 in his third or fourth year. My advice is not to torture yourself/bog yourself down with calc 1 if you can skip it. If you got a 5 on the ap exam, you must have gotten credit from UM for calc 1, and you are probably just fine starting in calc 2. Also, you should probably take calc 2 in your first semester so you don’t lose your edge/what you already know about calc. The math classes were definitely the classes that took the most work, studying, etc., and that prob won’t change no matter what math you take.

Ok, I’m starting to think that I might as well just take calc 2 cause it sounds like its gonna be difficult no matter what. Does anyone else have experience with math 175?

I would skip Calc I
