Calculating Academic index

Do all the IL schools use exactly the same calculator? I was under that impression but my S has one coach telling him his AI is different than the online calculators come up with. After doing an internet search, I did see some discussion about differences between schools but can anyone verify that for me? Thanks. We have no class rank so that can't be the issue but there are both ACT and SAT and SAT II scores. Doesn't seem to matter more than a point which one I use.

Recent information regarding the calculation of the AI notwithstanding, the exact method of calculation still remains shrouded in a bit of mystery.

In theory, I think the calculation should be the same for all schools in order to enforce the recruiting guidelines for which the AI was created, but my experience leads me to believe otherwise.

If you’ve read the NYT articles and used Varska’s online calculator, I’m curious about the difference between the AI you calculated and the one the coach gave you. Is the difference enough to be relevant?

Best of luck!

We also had multiple SAT, ACT and SATII scores and a very rigorous curriculum. I was trying to do the same calculations as OP using all different published methods and the range was 8 points. During the meeting with one of the coaches he mentioned my kid’s AI and it was 6 points more than my most optimistic projections. You really do not know what exactly they all doing - they may superscore ACT or add additional points for the rigor of the curriculum for example. The coach also mentioned the team average that he needs to achieve and where my kid is relative to this average. This is probably the most important piece of info. When we did academic pre-read we submitted all scores to them and let them pick and chose.

The coach was 6 points lower than our calculation but since our calculation is at the “lower” end of the acceptable range, it was concerning. The coach is forwarding all the scores and transcript to admissions so it may be a non-issue. I was just curious as to whether or not all schools use the same calculator since I guess I was under the impression that they did. Weighting for curriculum can only help in this case.
