Calculating GPA for US Schools (Ontario HS students)

@mmaythe - read what alam1 said. 94.5 is by far good enough for any school unless every1 in your grade is like that.

@alam1 - lol feel free. although i think you’re referring to thatguy’s chart.

I’m pretty sure on the CommonAp there’s a part where your GC inputs your ‘GPA’…but it says what scale is used. So, your GC could put 93 out of 100 (then there’s a part for weighted/unweighted, but you can put N/A i guess). Correct me if I’m wrong.

But >90 should be 4.0, but the thing is you can’t just take your average and say that it’s greater than 90 so you would have 4.0. You need to look at each individual course, convert those individually, and find the average of them.

So, I have no clue about the scales and all that, but if you use the 90-100 = 4.0 and 80-89 = 3.0, a student with 99,99,99,89 has a worse GPA than a student with 90,90,90,90.

(if you convert…though I think it would be better to just send in your %'s and let adcoms figure it out along with you class rank, etc.)

Your school has to send in your transcript with all of your % grades and courses with the midyear/final report, so in the end I don’t think it really matters.

No, a 95% from Canada is very likely to be a 4.0… I’m not disagreeing with you… What I am saying is very few American schools actually convert Canadian grades to GPA… so there is no point… they look at your grades relative to how your classmates did. I would not rely on converting your % marks to American GPA… I’ve talked to many colleges and most say they look at the marks in the context of your own high school… and that they do not convert to American GPA. However, if you are getting mid 90s or high 90s (even low 90s) in all subjects, you can be pretty sure it will be viewed as excellent grades.

So, for common app purposes, would a gpa from an Ontario highschool with no “weighting” be called “unweighted”?

Yes. If your GPA is all out of 4.0 or 100%, and you’re not adding GPA or percentage points for harder courses, that is unweighted.

Alright just checkin. thanks for your help

I’m kind of in a dilemma. At my school, some teachers tell you on the first day that he/she only gives out one 90. and everybody else gets 80s. But these are only the AP teachers.

however, our school ranks everybody the same. So if a student doesn’t take any AP courses, their average is significantly higher, but they are not necessarily the better student.

Yet, our school ranks everybody the same. So the best students are all ranked 20th or lower. What do i do?!

I totally get it!

Here I am, getting 80s, taking difficult course, (ranked not as high as I would like) with people who are taking easying courses, averaging in the 90s.

I honestly wish that our system is more similar to the states.

I think you should ask your GC if they send out class averages to the classes your taking specifically. thats probs the best shot. :)

lemme know how it turns out!

Do you guys think it will negatively impact my application if I don’t state a GPA? (I’m applying to the Ivies, etc)

I talked to my guidance counselor a while ago, and she said that our school doesn’t calculate them, which is typical of most Canadian schools I guess…
