I’m a junior who chose to take AP Calculus AB instead of BC because math is not my best subject and I was afraid it would bring my GPA down. It’s too late to switch courses now, but will I have a hard time getting into Ga Tech because of not taking the most rigorous math course possible? I’ll probably take ap stat next year because BC calc is so repetitive of AB. If I took BC this year I would’ve taken Ga Tech math senior year and that would’ve looked really good on my college application. I plan on working in the health care field but I’m not planning on going to medical school, just something that requires a bachelors and maybe a 1-2 year course after that. Do you think I’m screwed? I’m taking 4 AP courses this year and I’ll probably be doing medicine related internships either this year or next year. Would GA Tech or similarly selective schools not mind that I took AB if they see my other rigorous courses and intern experience?
I honestly was in the same situation during my junior year.I decided to take AB junior year and now I doing BC. I will say that BC calculus is rigorous (I find it more than AB) so it would not hurt you to take the class. Also by taking both AB and BC, you will get 2 credits at gt. I dont think you should worry about this; do whichever you think you can handle. One class is certainly not going to determine your admission! Whatever you do, make sure to get an A in the class.
Look at the major you are thinking of at GT and see if Calculus BC will help you get more college credits then take it if it will. Also will your GT major require calculus 3? If it will, then its wise to take calculus in your 12th grade year to keep math fresh in your mind. Statistics is entirely a different and useful subject for some majors too. Can you take both?
One thing about GT is many students seem to take longer than 4 years to graduate, but the students who place out of freshman subjects have a better chance of graduating in four years. BC Calculus is twice as much material as AB Calculus. AP Statistics is not really a college level class, although a useful subject. Many schools will not take AP Stats for credit, every college in the USA will take a 5 on the BC Calculus AP exam for credits. I believe GT will give you some additional credit, if you take it, I think Calc 1 and 2 for a 5 on the BC calc exam, but check that with the website.
