I am facing a little dilemma. I just finished Calculus III, the tests were very hard, the material not so much but the curve was ridiculous, I probably averaged a 55% on tests and ended up with a C.

I really enjoyed the material and I am thinking about retaking it for a better grade, realistically a B, an A would be hard.

Or else, I can go on to Differential Equations this Fall but I get a lot of conflicting information on how hard or how easy Differential Equations is, so I am trying to make a final decision this week

I absolutely would not mind retaking Calculus III. If I do, it may delay my graduation plans by one semester which is not really a big deal. What would you do?

I would take differential equations. Delaying graduation by one semester is not a good idea if you feel diff eq will be hard you can self study using pauls notes

http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/Classes/DE/DE.aspx

Yeah, don’t retake it, waste of time. I took Calc III & DiffyQ at the same time. I didn’t really like CalcIII but it was alright. I actually liked DiffyQ, it is heavily reliant on calc II and I felt the concepts were easier than calcIII…but that may just be me.

If you were majoring something that required mastery of calc III problem solving techniques I would say retake it, but I’m fairly certain you don’t need to do much with it in IE. Anyone in the IE field feel free to point out any examples if that is a bad assumption. DiffEq can be tricky, but it and linear algebra are likely to be the most useful math courses you take beyond calc II. Now if you’re looking to boost your gpa and feel that the costrisk of doing so is smaller than the costrisk of graduating with a less marketable gpa then go for it.

^Yeah, we don’t use calcIII much. Really all I have every used out of it is double integration, which is a pretty simple concept. I use linear a lot more than anything else really.

Thanks for all your responses. I added Diff Eq to my Fall Schedule. I am gonna try to buy the textbook and start working on it over the Summer.

Working on it over the summer sounds like a great idea. Whenever I’m about to take a class that has a reputation of being hard I look over the materials a couple of months in advance and try to grasp the basics beforehand.

DE is easier that Calc 3. Retake Calc 3 later if you can, it isn’t worth retaking unless you fail or something for the moment.
