I took AP Calculus BC as a junior this year and I am not sure if I should take a math class over the summer or online. I took AP Statistics, Honors Pre-calculus, and Calc BC in high school, so I only have 3 years of math. Will this make it harder for me to get into colleges because 4 years of math is recommended? What options do I have?

Completion of precalculus and calculus should carry the assumption that you understand the lower levels of high school math (algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2). Completion of calculus as a high school junior looks better than the “normal” level of math, which is completion of precalculus as a high school senior. So don’t worry about having only three years of math courses on your high school record.

If you want to take more math, look into local colleges for multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations courses.

If you’re headed towards a stem degree I would encourage you to find a local cc or online alternative to continue your progression to MVC. Besides what a college might want to see having a gap year between BC and MVC may be difficult if you don’t make an effort to refresh your skills. If you’re headed towards a humanities degree you may have covered your math requirements and I wouldn’t be as concerned if you wish to take something else instead. I’d make sure you replace it with another academic course so it doesn’t appear you’re taking an easier Sr course load. Best of luck.
