Calling all desis, everyone come...

am i allowed to start a "calling all whites" thread? or is that "in bad taste"?

Are you offended by an "Indian thread", Babybird? Last year, people seemed so offended by an African American students Thread, that they showed up en mass to smear excrement all over it, minimalizing the accomplishments of such students, and complaining about AA so loudly, the thread was locked by the moderators. Thankfully, quite a bit more tolerance is shown for the Indian threads, as they generally remain unmolested. The same can be said for the East Asian students threads, and even the Hispanic studets threads (at least, judging from last year's history). Only the African American threads were reserved for some form of fresh hell on a consistent basis. You think there might be a story in that?

You can certainly start a White Students thread if it will make you feel better, Babybird. But I have the feeling you'd only be doing it to "protest" the desire of other ethnic groups members to meet others of their kind on CC. I'm guessing you're probably a member of the majority population, and therefore, rarely find yourself in the position of feeling marginalized. Perhaps you'd understand the urge better if you ever found yourself one of only a few white people (or even one of only a few Americans) living in a place like Ghana, or the Amazon Basin. The ethnic threads are not meant to be an afront to white students, or anyone else Babybird.

Sorry, Boomer01---did not mean to hijack your thread! I was just hoping to head off a potential protest at the pass. I think it's great that there are so many high achieving Indians and Pakistanis on CC. South Asian cultures are fascinating to many of us who are not a part of them. I read the Indian threads last year with great interest. I would love to read more about the people here who have identified themselves as Indian or Pakistani. How long have you been in the United States, for instance? Might you perhaps be first generation Americans, or have your families been here for a number of years? What part of the country do you live in? Do you have siblings? Are your parents professionals (scientists? Academicians? Doctors? Business people? etc.), or are they blue collar workers? What are your academic aspirations? I enjoy reading the different ethnic threads. Keep posting!

BTW, Insaneindamembrane---LOL! I love your username!

I'm just wondering. After all, I have the experience of my freshman year in memory...there was a minority club for about every minority you could name, so someone tried to start a white club (minorities not excluded). Needless to say...shot down.

I'm certainly not offended, just amused by your desire to pounce on it as if I am.

What would be the point of a "white club"? What kind of activities would it do?

at my place of work, they have started ugly men club. Many of us are charter members.

it was going to be 1) a satirical jab at faux multiculturalism and 2) a white history club. Think Martin Mull's "A Paler Shade of White"

I thought why not make a thread for all the White people out there. So if you're White , come and let's see how many caucasians are on this board.

I am white and i live in the Bay Area
I am a junior and i plan to do medicine (another popular white major)

I'm white and I plan to be a bum.
For great justice!

White from England. I'm one in a billion.

White, but def. not seperatist/isolationist like some of the people at my school. "Look there is a white person! Lets automatically associate and ONLY associate with eachother!"

White from Idaho! 100% american raised...only white high school kid in like eastern idaho....which has a populatoin of like 250k....
unless there's mexicans, who i mistake for white many times

Texan, born and raised. Parents came to US from europe.
And yes, many Mexicans here!

I wish i was white so i could post here...

I am white girl from Cali(lived here all my life)! I'm a senior planning to do business, law(this most likely, or go into broadcast journalism.

Oh wow.. I'm white too.
Didn't realize there were so many here.

Hey im also white, just moved to america from London. I now live in CT.

I'm white too!!!!!! CT born and raised. Hmmm... let's see I plan on being a doctor (how original)

one of the few white kids i know in a rock band

White represent!

dang I want to white

^ hilarious

Why are these people trying to ruin our thread...? -.-

yes, people don't message on this thread, if you have nothing to contribute. Leave the brown man alone and carry on your white's man burden.

sarcasm aside, how many of you desis are still in touch with their culture? I came to the US at a young age, and was never into the cultural stuff and the various "pujas" at the house. But now, since I am living in a foreign country (singapore), I have made many indian friends and most of them are cool. It's weird for me, because I was born in India, lived in the US and now I am in Singapore. I am the "third culture" son and sometimes even I don't know my true indentity.

I probably have the most Anglicized (sp?) parents and so I haven't really been exposed to Indian culture. My parents never enforced nor taught me anything remotely related to Indian culture. (In fact I learned about bhangra when one of my friends showed me a music video and said "hey look at this funny indian guy") I recently went to a summer program where i made a few Indian friends and they knew a lot more about Indian actors, actresses, bhangra, songs, etc. I realized how much I didn't know, so when I went to India next I made a conscious effort to learn more about my culture and heritage, and I am particularly interested in the history now.

Hi, I am (of course) Mr. Patel. I'm a desi, of course.... BUT DAMN SO MANY DESIS ON THIS BOARD.

I came at 8, but I am still Indian. There are over 15 other Malayalee (people from Kerala) families around where I live and probably many more other Indians. We also go back every other summer. I have forgotten Hindi, however. :(

From the state of Tamil Nadu, living in Cali's Bay Area for the past 16 years.

just to point out...the name of thise thread was "calling all desis, everyone come" lol i'm glad all the white people were attracted to this not so specific title.
