I'm very interested in attending a liberal arts college, but I wanted to know from someone attending one or an alumni what your experience was. My goal is to become a high school English teacher and then pursue a law degree (I know a teacher and a lawyer). My mother would prefer I become a nurse, but my heart is not in medicine. I think going to an LAC would give me a well rounded education that would benefit me from years to come. As a student/graduate did you enjoy your time at your respective college? How has your experience at an LAC prepared you for life outside of college and your career?

I graduated from an LAC 30 years ago. For what it is worth, I loved it! I loved the small classes, and the chance to really get to know my professors. I still maintain some contact with one of them! I became very close to quite a few of the other students and groups of us occassionally get together even though we live all over the country. I feel like I grew up with these people. (I am married to one of them:)

As far as preparing one for life, going to an LAC really taught me how to think and how to related different topics to each other. I majored in one are, but went to graduate school in a completely different field. However, I still find connections between the 2. I know quite a few people who also ended up working in fields completely different from their majors. A liberal arts education (which can be obtained from a major university as well as an LAC) is really for people who want to learn about a lot of different things. You will major in something, but be required to take classes in a wide variety of areas. It won’t necessarily prepare you for any specific career, but will prepare you to be able to do a wide variety of things.
