This article is pretty eye-opening, and chilling in many ways. A lot of competing interests in play – wasn’t one of the victims of the Planned Parenthood shooting an on-duty CU-Colorado Springs police officer? – but surely our students deserve to have their rights fully protected?

Oops, sorry!!! Link added to OP. Thanks for the heads-up, @saintfan!
‘60 Minutes’ (CBS News) apparently did a story on the issue last night:
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/confidential-informants-60-minutes-lesley-stahl/
Seems that there are two things being conflated here:
- Police in general being or perceived as being more "shadowy" and "militarized" than before.
- Whether "campus security" are actual police.
Any student should take the time to figure out whether the “campus security” are actual police, if it is not obvious to begin with.
About 3 yrs ago, at UMass Amherst, a student was arrested for drug possession. Instead of getting him help, campus police forced home to become an informant. Shortly thereafter, he OD’d and died. As you might think, story exploded, with campus police coming out of it not looking good at all. Parents are suing.
