So there are special classes for the CHP members. When do the CHP classes begin , at freshman yr, or later?

Can one get into the CHP after freshmen yr or is it at freshman yr only?

How do they determine entry into the CHP? I think I saw ‘top 1 pct of applicants’. What more specifically does that mean? Highest test scores, highest GPA, highest class rank, or an amalgam of all three and more factors? what are the factors that go into the selection process?

Classes begin right away, and you have to take I think 4 classes in the first 2 or 3 years, I believe. You also have to do a minimum of social activities with CHP. You can petition to get in after freshman year (but you better have a 4.0).

Son was admitted last year (he’s a freshman now). His stats were 36 ACT, top 1% of senior class, NMF, GPA of 5.2/4.0), decent ECs and essays. I think it’s extremely competitive to get in, and inclusion in the program tipped the scales in UIUC’s favor for him.

That being said, he’s now wondering if it’s worth it…class he’s taking this semester is very hard and time consuming (on top of being an engineering major), making him have 17 credit hours. This particular class grades hard too.

In fact, a lot of his classes are really hard this semester, and he’s working like a dog.

d101parent-Do you think your son’s classes are hard because he is in accelerated classes because of AP credits allowed him to advance to higher level classes? Or is he just stressed taking the regular engineering Curriculum that a average freshman engineering student would take?

He is taking Differential Equations, which I believe is mostly a sophomore course, and it is hard but he is still doing ok since math comes fairly easy to him. His other classes are mostly freshman…one being MCB (micro-cellular biology??) which is a tough class at UIUC especially if you didn’t take A/P biology in highschool (he didn’t) and the CHP class: Both are giving him trouble this semester. Chemistry is OK, and the computer science class is tough for him but doing OK.

He doesn’t have to take Rhetoric or many other gen ed requirements. First semester he took 2 sophomore level physics classes and did fine with those.

Wow…that is a tough load. I looked up the typical schedule they give you and the Differential Equations class you refer to is listed for First semester Junior year, and the computer class is for first semester sophomore year so obviously he had some major AP credits in Math to get him in Advanced Math classes and I would assume the Computer class in pretty time consuming. It seems like to ease the stress the key might be to take a lighter load if you can do that with the AP credits you have accumulated coming into school. Engineers do require a lot of hours for graduation (some l32 hours) more than LAS but if you have AP credits going in it seems like you don’t need to take 17-18 hours every semester and be stressed out. At least that is what I am hoping for…

And there lies the issue with CHP…You need to take the classes whether you need them to graduate or not. I’ve read some old threads on CHP, and I think there are some relatively easier courses you can take. Son (IMO) scheduled his classes based on the times of the classes instead of the instructors, and he’s stuck with a really tough one this semester. Without the CHP course, he’d have a very manageable 14 credit hours this semester. And now he’s faced with possibly being kicked out of the program (and losing some scholarship money) if his grades aren’t adequate.

I wouldn’t be scared off. I took 5 CHP classes (although true the credit wasn’t always needed), but I got As in all of them, if not A+s. The workload was very light in most, so perhaps your son just picked a tougher class? I tended to speak with upperclassmen in the program to figure out the “easy” classes…or rather eliminate the hard ones since there are way more easy courses than difficult ones.

PS: I’m currently a junior in engineering and have completed all of my CHP requirements. Most went toward Gen Eds for me while a few were just excess credit since I came in with a fair amount of APs.

I found this FAQ on CHP, FYI

cooljay-just out of curiosity and you don’t have to answer but how many AP credits did you come into school with? And were most of them “transferable” like to your Gen Ed or Humanities requirements for Engineering?

any internationals got the notification yet?(especially indians)

Chris,

I just checked my transcript online and actually had less starting credit than I thought. I took AP English 1, AP English 2, AP Calc AB, and AP Psych in high school which gave me around 15 hours of credit coming in which knocked out RHET 105, Calc I, and a few Gen Eds.

CHP Courses that I took (I got A+s in 4 of them and an A in 1 of them):
ANTH 225
ANTH 103
ARCH 199
ART 199 Japan
CI 199

Also, the summer after my freshman year, I took CS 101 online, but everything else, I’ve taken here.
