pixeljig: That’s a great rate for the Knight Center; I’ve always been charged $109! We love staying there. Here’s a tip for breakfast. There’s a large room with tables and chairs, nice tablecloths and flowers adjacent to the buffet room–but it’s hidden (or maybe I’m just blind!) and you wouldn’t know it’s there. When you get off the elevator, go left and then left!

Enjoy WUSTL–it’s a great school and nice campus.

Havent read the whole thread, so apologies if this is no longer relevant. Looks like you took Vandy off your travel list. It is about a 3 1/2 hr drive from Atlanta, but understood if it adds too much travel. Just wnated you to realize that the distance isnt that different, I believe, than between Rice and UT Austin, to put it in perspective.

If your visiting Pepperdine and LMU you might want to stick to the Westside of LA and take one day of your stay to drive out to Pomona. LMU is very close to LAX and Pepperdine is just up the coast from the airport. What kind of scenery are you looking for? Last year I used Hotwire for the first time and they had some great prices on hotels in Manhattan Beach which is just south of LAX. Santa Monica is nice but the prices are probably going to be higher.

I will try and reply to all of you together ;)

Vandy is very much on DS1 list and I wanted younger one to see it as well, we had to take it out because of the time crunch. Thats a great idea!! To drive off to Vandy if time and energy permits.

We are all really looking forward to visiting WashU and its 2nd stop on our list, hopefully the weather will be nice by then. We are taking the tour on Sat and have the Sun to travel/free.

Great suggestions for LA. Will look into the hotel options. Harvery Mudd was on son’s list but he had to trim his high reaches… would still like to see the consortium and perhaps Pomona could work for DS2 even though a reach. I know that LMU will be a safety/match for S2 since he wants to go into education/counseling/public health.

How long would it take to drive from LMU to Pomona? Thanks all.

Google says about 55 minutes, but I would plan on 1 1/2 hours with traffic and maybe you’ll get lucky. Depending on the time of day, the 10 can turn into a parking lot.

We are heading out to CA to do a couple of schools next week. D lives in the OC so it is convenient, well except for the flying. Wonder if we should put LMU on the list - we’ve got Oxy, Chapman, USC(big) & Pitzer(reach). Was thinking of maybe San Diego U. We’ll be there for 4 days so perhaps we can squeeze one more in.

Tickets are on miles for that sector. Trying to increase the length in St Louis and decrease in ATL.

I am still so shocked that son got into Wash U and UT.

Gtech - I did not much care about it since I have heard so many negative reports on that school, it was scary for me. I am relieved in a way. I think son is a bit surprised.

Sorry to hear your s was denied at Tech, and sorry you heard negative things about Tech. It is a fine school. My s has several friends there, and several of my friends have kids there. The only real “negative” these days is that there was an issue with crime off campus earlier this year which got a lot of understandable attention. Otherwise it is a fine school.

Look on the bright side- now you hav more time to drive up to Vanderbilt.

pixeljig-I’d be very interested to hear the negatives you heard about Tech. If you read my review, we loved it. My sister’s nephew is a sophomore in the honors program there and could not be happier. I’m always open to other’s thoughts. You can send me a PM if you rather not post.

pixeljig, congrats on the WashU and UT acceptances. College admissions are such a mystery sometimes - why accepted at WashU and denied at Georgia Tech? I guess that is why students are applying to so many schools these days, to take advantage of the seeming randomness.

My S was a WashU ED admit. I saw your post on the WashU acceptances thread and wondered if you had started your mega-visit trip yet.

Depending which airline, trips on miles are actually usually easier to change than purchased trips.

Regarding GTech - I have read some posts on here itself in the Engineering section and also in the college life. I PM’d the kids and thats how I got the negative vibes. Son went on some blogs too and read some weird crazy stuff, he was not put off but in my heart I was. If he had gotten accepted and wanted to go I would have supported his decision.

Well, I think its all for the best how this is going now…I am truly proud of his acceptances so far…Santa Clara, Miami, UT and Wash U.

Not a 4.0 kid, but has taken the toughest load all throughout, gotten 5’s, done very well on the ACT. He is also an accomplished iPhone app developer and recently was in the newspaper as well as a magazine. I think that helped a lot.
