I had all these questions in my head I was going to jot down to take with me to my college visit in a week but I never did. Are there any questions you found particularily helpful to ask during your visits?

Some questions I always asked:

What is the food like?
How do students learn to balance work load and having "fun"?
What is the social climate like?
What would you change about the school/worst thing and vice versa?
What are the opportunities (on campus, off campus, etc.) other than study abroad for additional enrichment/internships/research?
What is the living situation like (dorm halls noisy, air condition, surrounding facilities...)?

And of course any question that is specific to want you want to study and/or are interested in. Hope this helps!

Do a search on the parents forum. Lots of good threads there. Funny anecdotes about parents' reactions to questions about drugs, drinking and sex.

Other questions: what's school spirit like? what cultural opportunities nearby? Diversity? How strong is Greek system? Where do most students come from? How tough is it to get the classes you need (i.e. how user friendly is the school or administration).

Also, don't just listen to the tour guide (professional salesperson for the school). Wander off into the library or a dining hall. Ask students there for the REAL low down. Would you choose this school if you could do it over.

I visited two ivies when I was a senior. The first one was overall positive and school was impressive. The second one: the students were bouncing off the wall in enthusiasm and practically went nuts when I said I was a prospective student. When both accepted me, guess which one I chose?

What activities are there to do off campus?
I asked this at one college and our guide was just like, "Uhhhh, well there is a Wal*Mart close by..."
