Hi,
I believe what you’re describing is a foreign exchange program. You can live with a host family in America, and get an American education. I’m not sure you can graduate with an American diploma if you’re representing your school because you would just be a visiting student. We have to take 3-4 years of most subjects for GPA credit, so it’s most likely you won’t get a diploma from the school. Most American schools have certain requirements, so if you find you meet the requirements then you may be able to get a diploma. In my school, we have a Danish foreign exchange student who is just staying for a year and can take whatever courses he likes since he’s not an actual student enrolled in the school. I would look up foreign exchange programs on the internet and also talk to your school. Many schools have foreign exchange programs. If that doesn’t work, you may be able to call the American school and ask them about being an exchange student. Also, many French teachers in America may be interested in having a French exchange student in their class. Hope this helps!

Hey , thank’s for all those informations , so it’s almost not possible for me to graduate high school in america ? I wish I could… but if I study my last year of high school in America and I don’t get graduate , will it be possible for me to go in college there in America ( Hopefully , I will manage to get good grades) .

The reason you won’t be able to graduate is because you won’t be an enrolled resident student. You can go to college in America because you would qualify as an international student. You would apply just like anyone else, but you would go under the international quota. However, make sure you get a high school diploma from the French school you go to, so you can go to college. I still recommend you speak to the American high school because we had Italian exchange students at our school who went to the graduation ceremony. Most likely you won’t get an American diploma because your credits won’t transfer.

I pmed you but i ll answer here anyway. Do you want to go to college or just experience american high school? In anycase, you should get your Bac in France first. Then you could go to an american high school for one year which would allow you to experience it and improve your english if you need to or apply directly to american colleges as an international student. There is absolutely no point in not finishing your terminale in france in order to spend your senior year in the US. As others have said above, you wouldnt have the credits necessary to graduate and you wouldnt have your bac either. This would make it very very difficult to apply to colleges.

Hey , I wanted to answer to your pm but I couldn’t ( I have to post 15 times to be able to send pm ) . Sorry than I answer you this late I was busy .So basicly it’s almost impossible for me to get graduated in america ? I understand , I will finish high school in france and then go to college in America , hopefully it will happen , but it seem like there is still a little chance than I can graduate in America , I know it’s a little one but I still want to try ! So how can I search a high school which will allow me to graduate ? Does any of you guys have any ideas? ( I want to be in chicago or not far from it , if not then I would rather stay in France ) . Thank you all for helping me it’s nice of you !

Do you have some sort of educational consultant where you live that specializes at sending students to America?

Yeah there is some societys who exist but they will send me in america but they said they can’t be sure to make me get graduated …

Hi callmelays,

If I were you, I would contact some private high schools in the area you want to live. It will have to be private school as no public high schools will let you transfer in and graduate unless you don’t mind starting over as a 9th grader. If your TOEFL (You must have this) score is high enough to prove that you can do all the high school work in English, depending on the school, they may consider accepting some credits from your current high school in France and allow you to transfer in. I would advise you to contact private high schools now and ask if they would even consider to evaluate your situation. You would probably want to visit the school during summer and work things out before you really make a final decision. The high school may even let you take some summer classes. Like I said, if your English is good enough to do well in high school in the US and you are a strong student at your current high school with good grades, transferring into a private high school and graduate may be possible, but doing so “on time” can be hard unless the American high school accepts many of the credits from your current high school. (It may take longer than a year for you to graduate after you transfer in) So email some private high schools directly.

Finishing high school in your country and go to college in Chicago will be much easier, though.

If you go to high school in America, it won’t be incredibly easier to get into an American college than of you applied through France because an American high school diploma doesn’t make a big difference to colleges. If you applied through France you might be seen as unique. Which colleges are you looking at? There are MANY small colleges in America that have a pretty high acceptance rate, and would definitely love international students. Again, this depends on which college you want to go to. If you want to go to any university as long as it’s in the US, then you should not have a problem getting in. If you have good grades, and a good TOEFL score, you’ll be able to get in. My dad got his Master’s in America, and he didn’t go to school in the US. For your undergrad, if you start looking at colleges, then you will certainly find a college that suits you.

Hello guys, sorry for answering you lately (again ) .
I am going to stay in France and graduate high school here and then I will go in America for college , it’s the best choice and it’s easier for me .
Thank you all for the help , I really appreciate !
I changed my mind and I think I will study in community college and then in an university in California.

PS : If you were wondering I am a STI2D student (basicly , i am learning technology & sustainable developpment instead of biology or laws/economics) .

Great! There are a lot of good colleges in California, and you’ll do great with a good high school base.
