Ok guys. My freshman year I took 2 honors classes, Bio and Geometry. I got an A in Bio and a B in Geometry. I finished that year with a 4.0 weighted GPA.

My Sophomore year I took 4 honors classes, Chem, Algebra 2, World History, and English 10. I got A's in all of them, but feel I could've taken AP World History and AP prep English. The biggest problem this year was Spanish. I got a B- in that class, and it brought my GPA down to a 4.07.

My Junior Year I took 3 AP classes, Bio, US History, and English 11 along with 1 class graded on an AP scale, MicroEconomics. I also took Honors Precalculus and Honors Physics. I got A's in everything and a GPA of 4.8. I was #1 in my class. I also took the SATs and got a 2300.

Along with my great charity work, and my published fiction pieces. What would you say my chance is of getting into these schools.

Thanks for your help

Would you mind revealing the name of your fiction pieces? I’m quite interested about that.

I can’t judge from this information; it’s a bit too little. That being said, no matter how much info you give me, there is no way to accurately judge your chances, but I could give you some general advice.

You might prefer to be a bit specific. For example, when listing your EC, instead of:

Fiction-writing → Author

write:

Fiction-writing → Author of XXX

If all you’ve did was great charity work and publishing fiction pieces, people may say it’s not enough, but I think that’s sufficient. You may want to link these two together to create something unique if you have the time…for example, publishing a fiction piece related to your observations in charity work?

Other than that, your scores are decent and fine. Assuming you took the most rigorous course load possible in your school, I’d say that you stand a good chance if you perfect that essay, stand out uniquely, and fit the school culture.

If you’re Catholic, add your chances for Georgetown by a bit. Not sure if it actually matters.

Assume that both universities are between high match to reach.

^Skyrior, the OP does not specifically need to list the name of his work and everything else in THAT much detail. He has a published piece of literary work, what more do you need to know? This is just a chance thread, and most likely NOT the OP’s CommonApp. Furthermore, the OP may give away his identity to the Internet by providing such specific details of information, which I would strongly advise him NOT to do. If the OP were to give the name of his literary works, people could just search for the work and find his name and possibly other information about him or her. I would strongly suggest that the OP refrains fom posting such detailed information as you suggested (like the name of his published work) as a) it is useless since we know that the work is PUBLISHED, b) this isn’t the CommonApp it’s just a chance thread, and c) it gives away information that could be used in a negative way by some people on the Internet. Although CC is an excellent site full of helpful information, you never know who could be on this site. Also, Georgetown does not discriminate against applicants who are not Catholic. A senior this past year from my school applied to Georgetown and he got accepted, despite being Muslim. The reason you see so many Catholic students at Georgetown is because they are drawn to this particular school since it shares their religion, and not because Georgetown discriminates against any students who are of other religions.

Now, to the chancing part. Academically, OP you are very competitive. Great SAT score, very good GPA. Your ECs however are very good, but perhaps not that great, unless you have published pieces of literature that are very popular among the public. Perhaps start a writing club at school? Maybe you can provide free creative writing lessons to the children who are poor and suffering in your area. Just do a couple more things that show your passion for writing and you can improve your chances greatly. Good luck!

Georgetown: High match/Low reach
Duke: High match/Low reach

I think Georgetown and Duke are both low reaches for you right now, because you could use more ECs and leadership. Your academics are actually very good; colleges like to see an upward trend. Also, try to take a few subject tests because they’re required for Georgetown :)
