yea i hate urm knockers on this board..Oh and by the way Princeton was ridiculous this year in terms of admission

I had a 3.6 UW gpa, 30 on the ACT 5 AP classes, African-American, Legacy and i still didn't get in so yea lol

^ Those stats are definitely low for Princeton. To whoever said Columbia is much better than Cornell...why? Cause its higher up in the rankings? Cuase it has more perstige? That doesnt mean the school is better. Once you get to the top 20 schools it comes down to personal preference. None of them are vastly superior to each other.

A 30 act is really low. For Princeton you should have like a 34. A 3.6 uw is like an 89 so yea.

in my school it is full of blacks and hispanics.

a hispanic girl got into john hopkins with a 1500-1600 SAT score. im not lying. her record was just okay–she volunteered, did some summer program at a local hospital–nothing too drastic.

another girl, who was black, i know got a 1850 SAT score and was accepted into Columbia. she, also, was not amazing in terms of ECs…

You all know that sooner or later this thread will begin to turn into a race discussions thread, right? I am african american by the way.

It’s more likely than an ORM getting in with that score, but still unlikely.

Uh…

it’s possible. there are tons of URMs here who brag about getting a 1600 (out of 2400) and “still getting in”. standards are ridiculously low, all for the sake of “diversity”

In direct response to the above post, you do realize that there are such things as ■■■■■■ on the internet, no?

In general response to the recent posts on this thread, you guys do realize that this is necro from 07, no?

A girl at my school got into Harvard this year. She’s a low income minority. She had a pretty good GPA–probably 3.9 UW, but her SAT was like 1800 if not lower. So the answer is yes. Unfortunately for the rest of us who don’t have minority status working in our favor.

^ actually i didn’t notice that this thread was from 07. wouldn’t have said anything if i had. oh well

I would say the bar is SLIGHTLY lower for URMs, but not very significantly. Like… I feel like they still need the scores, GPA, etc… but maybe if they’re lacking that WOW factor just the scores and GPA along with decent to good ECs are enough to stand out among other URMs. However, I don’t think very many URMS get into Ivies with SAT scores below 2000 (generally).

I know an African American who’s a first generation and got a 2100+ who got waitlisted by Harvard and Yale (but into Penn among other “lower” Ivies). He’s definitely academically qualified and has some nice ECs but doesn’t stand out drastically in my opinion. Still, his intelligence is DEFINITELY up to if not greater than the other people at the school he will be attending in the fall. He just… you know, hasn’t cured cancer and isn’t president of 15 clubs like it seems like ORMs and caucasians have to do to get into ANY of the Ivies.

I’m from Southeast Asia - is that considered part of the general Asian population (and therefore overrepresented) or am I kinda underrepresented as well??

As a SE Asian, your chances may be better than if you’re Chinese or Korean, but you’re still competing for one of the very competitive spots for Asians and are not in the realm of URMs.
