Does winning (two times) semifinalist at the Siemens Competition equal in prestige as USAPhO, USABO, IMO, ISEF, etc. for MIT?

Thanks so much.

yes. it will destroy your chances.

how could you even think that MIT would want someone who wins awards? gosh, you are so naive.

Can an award actually hurt you?

Yeah, you might get a papercut from the certificate or the trophy/plaque can drop on your foot and you might be paralyzed for life. Oh yeah, and forget about MIT. They don't even care about those silly math and science awards anymore. :)

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Hi ALL!

I apologize sincerely--my title was wrong

My question is

Does winning (two times) semifinalist at the Siemens Competition equal in prestige as USAPhO, USABO, IMO, ISEF, etc. for MIT?

Thanks

No, it is not equivalent in prestige to the olympiads, although it depends on which level of US olympiads you are referring to. I would categorize siemens semis equivalent to USABO semi, USAPHO semi, somewhere between AIME and USAMO qualifier.

I thought you could only apply to Siemens as a senior, making the feat of making semifinalist two times impossible.

I guess that one could say "who's who" could hurt if you have a particularly snarky adcom rep on a bad day...
But then again, one could say that "who's who" isn't a real award anyway.

Once is enough, and the answer is....

No.

Hey mad-caps!

My question is NOT if an award can hurt you.

zipper's attempt at humor is quite valiant.

^^^^^ NO. It's not humor.

Thanks.

it gets better every time he posts the same question that's been answered (twice) in his own thread.

Losing perspective can hurt you.

^^^^^ What does that mean? Can you emphasize/explain more? Can you? Hu hu, can you. Can you? Please?

Ok, let's try this very slowly and clearly.

Answer: No.

You question implies MIT has different standards from everyone else. Why?

Who gives a crud? You won awards, just appreciate it. Geez.

chronicidal,

I just thought that MIT was more research oriented, and so a research award would matter more than an award given if you take a test. I mean, all those other awards are tests--the information can't really be used to benefit people, you know? On the other hand, research can be used practically, to benefit people.

Whatever. Don't overanalyze it. An award is an award. List it if you want, but it's not going to make or break your application. It's just another supplement to your overall app.
