Can an essay make or break your chances?

I know the essay is important, but HOW important is it? I have heard of students who had been accepted into their long shot schools because of their outstanding essay. Does it hold that much of importance?

Come on guys, not a hard question!

most schools yes, some not that much. In general, i believe they do make a difference because they are the only way admissions officers can see who you are. My friend had a 3.0 1900's SATs and ok ec's, but he wrote a bomb essay and got into UCLA and Pomona

yeah i agree. the essay depends on the level of school you're applying to and so forth. if it's a reach school, the essay will be what gets you in. if it's a safety school, it really doesn't matter that much.
