Hi guys!
There are some troublesome questions that I ran into while I was studying for the SAT. I hope you can help me clarify and answer the questions
So here they are:
1)In the Bay of Fundy the rising tide produces (a so powerful inward surge) that it actually reverses the normal flows of several rivers (Improving Sentences)
-The corrected sentence is as follows:
1)In the Bay of Fundy the rising tide produces (an inward surge so powerful) that it actually reverses the normal flows of several rivers
-For what reason should I reverse the 2 parts??

2)In 1961 Rita Moreno (gained fame) and (won) an Academy Award (for her portraying) Anita in the film (adaptation of) groundbreaking Broadway musical West Side Story. (No error)
-Here, "for her portraying" is the correct answer, but why it is wrong??

3)Here is part of the paragraph:
(1) Play in young animals (including humans) is an appealing and quite mysterious behavior. (2) But unlike many other behaviors, play seems to be biologically purposeless and even disadvantageous. (3) They do not achieve an obvious, life-serving goal as they do in other behaviors such as finding food, mating, repelling intruders, and resting. (4) In fact, animals at play seems to expend a lot of energy for no useful purpose and risk hurting themselves.

In context, which is the best version of the underlined portion of sentence 3 (reproduced below)
(They do not achieve) an obvious, life-serving goal as they do in other behaviors such as finding food, mating, repelling intruders, and resting
-The obvious problem with this sentence is the vague "they". However, 2 choices seem to correct this error, and i cannot decide which is better!
Choice 1(the correct choice):
(When they play animals do not achieve).............
Choice 2:
(Play does not help those animals achieve)..........

4)For the critical reading, I have no problem with the sentence completion section at all. But for the critical reading passages, that's my agony. Sometimes I find a passaga somehow appealing perhaps because I previously took it at school or just that I like it (for ex scientific passages, especially those about animals). At those passages I mistaken at 2 questions at most, while most the time I get all the questions right. However, at other passages that seem extremely dull and elicit my nausea ( for ex historical passages and convoluted discourses), if I got half of the questions correct, I'd be lucky. So plz, if you now any sort of panacea that might cure me of my disease, inform me right away. Thnx!
