Can anyone tell me about internships, jobs after graduation, and the alumni network?

Would it be difficult to find internships for majors like economics or physics? How helpful is the career services in helping you find one?

Is the alumni network good in helping you find jobs after graduating? I intend to major in the STEM.

D was a Neuroscience/Biology double major. She had paid internships (REUs - research experiences for undergraduates) after her second and third years. REUs exist for both economics and physics; see, e.g.: https://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/list_result.jsp?unitid=69. She applied for multiple positions and received multiple acceptances. Her experience was far from unique. Most of her friends also received REUs. The profs are very supportive and helpful in the application process. She also had no difficulty getting a research assistant position in neuroscience upon graduation. Again, her profs were instrumental in assisting her. I would assume that the Economics and Physics departments would be similarly supportive.

Research opportunities sound great! What about job experience?

Current Oberlin students typically don’t come to College Confidential to report on these activities. My D did not know it at the time she applied to Oberlin, but she has learned during her first year that Oberlin sponsors various business and internship opportunities. Oberlin student-run investment club actively manages approximately $300,000 in investment portfolio. Winter term can be used to learn about business from alumni who return to Oberlin to teach business concepts and methods. Just last month in April 2018, Oberlin LaunchU funded $37,000 for business ventures started by current and former students. Oberlin also sponsors a business scholar program that prepares students for in-person meetings with various business leaders in the U.S., including in Cleaveland, NY, Boston, and SF.
