My family’s gross income was 78k in 2015
My dad’s income was 91k (my mom doesn’t earn anything since she got laid off a few years ago)
My parents savings are 46k.
Current worth of investments: 101k
I’ve seen people with EFC’s lower than me but they earn over 110k. I applied to USF (San Fran) and received 22k in merit. However, I got zippo financial aid. All I got was subsidized loan for 1.5k and unsubsidized loan for 1k. Is this normal?? Cost to go to USF is like 60k and im out of state. What should I do???
My parents tell me all they’re willing to pay is 6k…USF is my top choice and I was expecting at least 5k in grants. I am trying to major in Physics and do the 3+2 Engineering Program. Should I write an appeal letter and say how I’m a woman in STEM etc.
How can your family’s gross income be only $78k if your dad earned $91k? If everything was filled out correctly, it sounds like the investments drove the EFC up.
Also, I don’t think CA publics offer need based aid to OOS students. So even if your EFC were less, I don’t think you’d get more aid there.
“Funding is limited and students with the lowest expected family contributions as determined by the FAFSA will receive priority.” says it on their website.
They have a work study program for 4k but thats like 34k left over. Would outside scholarships be able to pay off a lot? I’ve done a ton of local ones so far. Yeah I have a backup school (UNR) idk i checked my FAFSA and thats what my mom put on the gross income. HM but I did early action and the financial aid offers haven’t come out yet for reg decision applicants
Outside scholarships to cover $30,000 plus a year? Not likely. Most outside scholarships available now are one year awards, not renewable, and are for smaller amounts.
Okay it’s hard to say but USF is not known for giving 100% of need. It gives about 60% of need according to collegedata.com
There’s merit aid and need-based, basically, and grants from the government and loans.
USF for about 100K income the average cost is $34K. (see collegenavigator for that info).
You may want to try other schools. Look at UCs or Cal State schools for lower tuition. Cal STate Chico would cost in comparison $19K per year on average for $100K income levels.
UC Santa Barbara would be about $21K for $100K income level.
UC Santa Cruz–which your GPA may work for currently – would be about $24K.
If you take a year at a California Community College you should be able to transfer into a senior California College
Google for a list of private colleges that provide 100% of need. You may be able to transfer into one of them. Vassar, Grinnell, Haverford, UChicago, Reed. etc.

TBH I dont even know this was my mom’s first time filling it out. Im an only child
UNR=University of Reno (nothing really to do there but engineering is good I’ve heard
I would only be doing USF’s room n board freshman year the other years I’d have free room and board. (first yr housing is required) so that’d cut around 15k
@Dustyfeathers This student is a Nevada resident. She will not receive a nickel of need based aid from the UCs because the UCs do NOT give aid to OOS students anymore. She will receive minimal aid from the CSUs…their mission is to provide aid to instate students…not OOS. She is NOT going to find a bargain school in the public universities in CA.
Here is the COA for CSU Chico…NOTE…non-residents add an additional $372 PER UNIT to the regular tuition cost.
Some things to consider if you are sure you want to pursue engineerring–a 3+2 program adds additional financial stress by requiring a 5th unnecessary yr. Additionally, co-oping is a good idea for work experience (and a way to make a significant amt of $$ while in college) but co-ops are not typically pursued by 3+2 students.
