Can CPT dates be changed after new I-20 is printed?

Hi all,

Midway through my internship, can I change my CPT end date (either to end at an earlier or later date), assuming that my company allows it? I know that every single 1 of my 365 days of 'free' CPT is precious, so I need to use each CPT day wisely. Hence I might possibly shorten this one internship to save days for the next, or extend the internship possibly.

I'm talking about +- 1 or 2 weeks of the internship duration at most, which I hope is a commonplace enough occurrance among student internships (eg: domestic US student who wish to end early by a week seems like a decent, normal request)

My next, related question is this: if the internship is in the spring or fall semester, is it fine if my internship ends a few weeks earlier than the school semester's official end? From a legal immigration standpoint, that is. It just means I enjoy a somewhat longer summer, right?

Thanks for your help!

It is possible to change the dates of your CPT; it’s up to your “designated school official” to approve that.

Ask your international student adviser. The law is phrased confusingly enough in that matter that I don’t want to venture a guess at an interpretation. If you’d like to see for yourself, look here: [Sec. 214.2(f) Students in colleges, universities, seminaries, conservatories, academic high schools, elementary schools, other academic institutions, and in language training programs --](<a href=“eCFR :: Title 8 of the CFR -- Aliens and Nationality”>eCFR :: Title 8 of the CFR -- Aliens and Nationality)

Here’s my guess: if you have a full-time courseload with a part-time internship, ending the internship early should not be a big deal. If your CPT authorization is for full-time employment, ending that early might be a problem because your full-time student status (and with it the validity of your visa) is tied to your job.

Thank you, Barium. Knew I could count on you to chime in with your knowledge. Good to know that CPT end dates can be changed retroactively, after it has been printed for the first time.

Yes, the internship is full-time. (Part-time CPT is unlimited, so I would not have to worry about that at all :D). Like you said, it really sounds like grey area to me if everything is ± 1 or 2 weeks only (eg: full time internship ending 2 weeks earlier than school’s official semester end). Maybe it’ll be up to the discretion of the DSO or CPT-granter person? ;)
