Can/do people lie on Naviance?

I’m a senior in the middle of the applications process, and on Naviance I noticed that you have the option to self-input your admissions results for each college. I understand the shame (kind of?) in having to put down where one got deferred or rejected, but it bothers me that people may be putting down incorrect results and screwing with the data. I didn’t take Naviance too seriously, but now I’m wondering if I should be taking it even less seriously than I did before.

My questions, I guess, are:
Is the admissions data on Naviance completely self reported by students? Do students lie?
Is the data on Naviance ever checked by the school’s guidance office?

I doubt anyone would do that. If they did, they’re an outlier, and it really shouldn’t affect the actual scattergram. You should be able to see trends in GPAs and SAT scores of people that got into, got rejected from, and got deferred from the college you’re looking at. If you see a guy with a 2.5 GPA getting in, assume it’s an outlier, or he had a massive extenuating circumstance. Either way, it should affect neither your experience with nor your view of the credibility of Naviance.

I would imagine the data is also checked, although I could be wrong.

If they saw a spike in, say, 10 extra kids being accepted to Cornell, then yeah they’d see something fudged up.

I doubt many kids would actually do that. There’s no point they’re still not in, and Navinace is anonymous so nobody will know it’s them. It’s weird you even have the option on Naviance because at my school you don’t.

Also a student may get a 28 ACT and a 1400 SAT. Both would be in Naviance but it would be the 1400 SAT that helped him get accepted.

Hooked applicants: athletes, URM’s, legacies, are not identified in Naviance so that could be the reason for outliers too.
