Can high school make someone take the SAT again....

My daughter has already taken the SAT in Dec 2019. She got a very good score and does not want to take it again. But her high school is making everyone take the SAT next month, free of cost (paid by the county I guess). The school has registered all the students including my daughter. What options does she have if she does not want to take it again? Thank you for your advice.

I would start by contacting your D’s guidance counselor. If you are unhappy with the answer you can speak to the principal/superintendent.

Talk to her guidance counselor. I have heard some schools will not make her take it again, especially if she got a very high score and might be at risk of getting a lower one this time around. It depends on the school’s policy (which presumably have to align with state laws or guidelines too).

Edited to add: unless she is applying to colleges that require her to submit ALL scores at ALL sittings, retaking won’t hurt her (maybe just a waste of time, though).

You just need to supply her score to the school. She should not have to take it again, and if she doesn’t turn up for the test, that is that. But first off I would play ball with the school becuase they will want her great score in their arsenal. It really should just be a small admin task. Quite a lot of states mandate taking a test for their records, but it doesn’t have to be a specific date.

In my state, taking the state administered SAT given at each HS on the same day is a HS graduation requirement.
Previously taken tests can’t be substituted to satisfy the grad requirement.

Yeah, I am sure lots f schools like to wrap it in that language, but that is basically unenforceable for a student with a current recorded score and a parent that is say, a lawyer LOL.

Ditto post #4. Our state used the ACT to meet graduation requirements and it had to be taken on a specific day. My D would have been one and done too. There was no flexibility in getting out of it. As it turned out, the extra test did help her superscore.

Not sure if you were replying to me…but I have not heard of anyone getting out of this graduation requirement and many have tried. Lots of highly paid lawyers in town too.

Seriously, if you know of a case precedent some people here would love that info.

Edited to add:@homerdog Has any one in your neck of the woods been successful in challenging the state mandated SAT grad requirement?

Taking the SAT is graduation requirement?! WTH? What if my kid was sick that day. Would they pay to make her retake it on a non-school day? I’m sure you’ve already had this conversation with friends ad nauseam, but I just can’t understand how this is a mandatory requirement. My kid didn’t go to college so why would they need an SAT score anyway?

Yes, if you miss it the testing coordinator will reschedule it for another day. They do track these kids down and make them take it.

It’s so ingrained here that most parents don’t think anything of it. And we have lots of demanding parents relentlessly complaining about many things.

Thank you all for the responses so far. I just wanted to add that we are from Maryland – don’t think MD mandates this as a graduation requirement but I am still searching the web to get the latest status. She got a score that was more than 1570 in her first attempt, and does not want to take it again if possible. She may also be applying to some schools that require all the results to be reported.

@eb23282 In our state, moving to using ACT/SAT happened after the state got rid of the state graduation test that was given starting in 10th grade. There was too much “teaching to the test” going on.

Maryland parent here. Not a graduation requirement in our neck of the woods, Harford county

The states that seem to require either ACT or SAT testing in 2019 are listed below…

FWIW, IMO, it was better to move to this model than the state testing that seemed to change every year.

momofsenior1 – Which state is yours? I guess that this model has its merits but maybe they can allow the test to be taken any time rather than mandate it on a particular date.

D graduated HS in Ohio.

What is the state’s name? Thanks.

I’m in Illinois

I went all the way to our superintendent and couldn’t get S19 out of the SAT at school even though he had an SAT test he was using for college admissions. The state of Illinois requires it in school in order to get your diploma and for GCs to send final transcripts to colleges (which colleges require for the kids to enroll.)

It’s because the state pays the College Board to supply this SAT for the state to track all students’ progress over the four years of high school. Other states have other tests they use that kids have to take. The PSAT/SAT selection of tests are used by Illnois and required.

It sucked but, really, in the end it was no big deal to take it. You don’t have to send it to colleges. The first year that Illinois required the SAT, the score was put on kids’ transcripts and I believe it was parents in @Mwfan1921 's district who went bonkers and went to Springfield to have that changed. Of course many kids don’t want their scores for that test on their transcript for colleges to see. Many kids send an ACT to colleges, not the SAT. And many kids, like our S19 and the OP’s D, already took an SAT and are happy with their score. So now the score is not reported on transcripts. I guess the only time schools would see it is if you apply to colleges that require all scores. There aren’t many of those.
