Can I Become A Manager With A Degree In Marketing?

I was an accounting major but decided I couldn’t do it because Tax was like a foreign language to me. So it came down to me switching to Management or Marketing. I took a previous Marketing course before I switched and I kind of liked it seemed like it was a pretty good subject to me. But I’m in my last semester right now and looking back on it that might have been a mistake. I really would rather get into Management when I graduate, I’m not expecting to get hired right away I’m going to need some training. I just chose Marketing because I liked it rather than what I thought I wanted to have a career in. I have taken some management classes but not a whole lot. If I’m not going to be in some kind of sales place I really have no interest in getting into Market Research and stuff like that. So is what I learned in Marketing sufficient enough to help me learn how to be in Management?

Long-term, yes
Short-term, no

From what i’ve read (NO PERSONAL EXPERIENCE TO SUPPORT), with enough experience any degree can get you a management career. With that being said, how much experience it takes and where exactly can you get that management career isnt clear. Honestly, i’d research and consider these two plans.

  1. Work at a sales place doing marketing and work your way up to a management position i.e. Director of Marketing
  2. Go back to school and get an MBA in Management

Thank you ^^^ that gives me some help. My summer job involves a lot of selling and face to face interaction. I’ve built up a good rep for myself the last 4 years as I continue to get the same people that come back every year. It’s a little bit of self management but not a ton, I’m pretty much my own boss but I still do answer to someone. From doing this job I have extremely good references I could use to fall back on. As long as everything goes ok this semester, I will graduate in May and I will be walking away with no debt. Never took out one loan paid my school with all the money I earned in the summer and this year had to dip into my savings a little. At this point I’m really not interested in going back for another year I’m extremely burned out and need to just be done with school and start working. If I need to go back and I have the money in the future I will but if I can just get a job that pays decent enough to where I could at least get a little money saved up that would be ideal. I’m 22 right now, my parents are not in any hurry to kick me out we’re still close and they already said they don’t want me to leave until I’m 25, lol. I’m ok with that I like spending time with my family and I’m not in any serious relationship so I really don’t need to move out. After school I’m going to have about 6 weeks off to recharge and then have about 12 weeks of working my summer job in there somewhere I’ll have a weeks family vacation. After that summer job ends it will be a mystery where I go from there. My mom’s friends pretty much are in charge of some nice hotels and my mom talked to them and said I could probably get a job there doing something no problem with a business degree, which is in Marketing. I’m sure somethings can apply there if not at least I can learn and be trained for something new.

I’m not expecting the most lucrative job when I come out of school, I know the market is still not the best but I hope being that I do have some good experience working and paying my way through school and some good references as well that at least that would be something I could use to sell myself.

You can for sure. I have a degree in marketing, but never actually worked in the field (and became a manager my 3rd year out of college). I had taken some IT classes and got a job on the IT side instead.

^^^ glad to hear that it’s very encouraging. I’m not talking about being a CEO of a company, just like the manager of like a small operation or store. Just want to go to a job where I can learn and potentially progress. Nice to know I’m not limited.

Oh just ignore what I said. I thought you meant for a larger position. Yea, definitely with your current work history and even maybe 1-2 years at the store, you’d be an assistant manager or a supervisor which would train you then to possibly move into a full manager position at that location or another.
