Can I become an accountant if I choose to transfer to UNC?

Hey guys. It seems like UNC doesn’t have any business majors that specifically focuses on accounting. Does it mean that I should choose a different business route (Real estate, Business administration) if I choose to attend UNC ?

It’s confusing to me because my mom said that she knows some accountants who have bachelor’s from UNC.

Your responses would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Rav1103,

You can only earn a general business degree from Kenan-Flagler. However, you can specialize your degree with accounting electives. It gives you pretty much the same accounting degree without the title. Here’s a list of electives/specializations. http://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/en/programs/undergraduate-business/curriculum/electives.aspx

If you want to pursue accounting at UNC (or anywhere else really) you will want to apply for a Masters of Accounting Degree. If you want to attain professional certification (CPA) you will need to complete 150 semester hours anyway, which equates to a masters degree. It looks like UNC, like many schools, no longer offers a Bachelors in Accounting.According to UNC’s website, it looks like you can enter UNC’s master’s program with any bachelor’s degree. A strong background in business and accounting basics will help of course.

Chapel Hill no longer offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. When the CPA certificate started requiring 150+ hours to obtain, they changed to a Master’s Degree. Most people would apply to the business school and get a Business major and follow that with a 5th year to obtain a Master of Accounting degree. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree from another college, but did the 12 month Master of Accounting degree program at Chapel Hill (class of '95). The program is outstanding and has a 95% job placement rate or higher. Good luck!
