Can I cite a book in a college essay?

<p>For an essay I'm writing, I thought of a book I read that fits very well with the topic and I would like to use it to help develop my ideas. However, I'm wondering if that's considered odd or shouldn't be done when applying to a college. </p>

<p>If I am allowed to use it, do I have to cite the book in MLA format at the end of my essay, or how should I do it?</p>

<p>I wouldn’t use MLA format, the essay is supposed to be informal writing. I think it will be sufficient to say </p>

<p>In The Politics of Gender, Edith Smiths says…</p>
