Can I get a Vacation Scheme/TC at a top law firm with a 2/2 in Contract Law?

Good afternoon,

I am a First Year student at King’s College London in the UK and I have just received my module results for First Year (based on 24 hours take-home exams) and I was appalled and devastated to see that I obtained 59 in Contract Law (that is, a 2:2) which is regarded as the most important module and is very very important to law firms when they look at applications for open days/vac schemes/TCs. This is particularly upsetting for me because I was doing very well in Contract and expected a First - meanwhile average students obtained a First…

Note that I am doing a special 4 Year LLB course “Politics, Philosophy and Law” and that apart from this module, I obtained 64 in Politics, 74,5 in Philosophy and 69 in EU Law (again the 9-ish is annoying because I almost got a First…).

Thus, I was wondering what were your thoughts on my ability to still try to pursue a career
at a top firm (especially, US ones) with this grade.

Thank you in advance!

This is a mainly US site so not likely to be many people with first hand knowledge of the UK legal recruitment system. I would ask your lecturers in the first instance.

But I do know it is really competitive these days and I suspect a 2.2 would disqualify you from consideration by ‘top firms’ at least, and quite likely others too. Sorry.

But you have plenty of time to improve your final degree classification.

Do you have the legal right to work in the UK after your course, or would you also be needing a work visa?

If you’re planning on working in the US, I would have thought you would need to do law school in the US after graduating?
