Can I get in?

I'm currently a junior looking into Georgia tech and I was wondering what some of you guys thought about my resume...

General Background: New Jersey, Male, Indian. School is beginning to suck but it still retains a good reputation among colleges. (We always get a good number of students into Ivy League schools)

Academics: (My School Uses) Weighted GPA- 3.9/4.0 Unweighted is probably a 3.5
Rank - unsure, at least top 25%
I take the hardest classes my school has to offer including
-5 years of sciences (1 of honors chem, bio and earth science, and 2 of physics AP),
-5 years of math (Algebra II, Geometry, Pre Calc Honors, AB Calc, and AP Stat) And I have taken a precalc summer course
- 2 Years of technology courses including Transportation Technology, Tech and Design, and Robotics
-and also 4 years of history and English both AP. (the only thing I don't take honors/AP of is Spanish)

SAT Scores- 700 math, 670 in Reading and 680 in Writing
I haven't taken my Sat II's or AP tests yet but they will include:
Math II Sat, History Sat, English literacy SAT
AP tests will be: AP English, AP US History, AP Calc, AP Stat, AP Econ Macro/Micro, AP Physics,

Extra Curricular:
1. Track (Sprint Varsity) - 8 years (through high school) with numerous awards. Summer of 9th Grade I qualified for Nationals (AAU) after passing the county, state, and regional level. Time commitment- Every day (including weekends not sunday) during the spring time.

10. Nominated from my School to attend Governor's School of International Studies

I should be able to get a recommendation from some excellent physics/math teachers

and, I am also intending to apply for mechanical engineering, can you chance me on that program?

You’ll be fine.

I would admit you, but I wouldn’t say it’s a definite admission. Your SAT is average but your GPA is in the bottom 25%. Your ECs look good.

ps. tech does not care about the major on your application

you’re in.

I don’t know how you guys can say he’s obviously in.

I think unless you copy and paste the wrong essay, you should be accepted. You take the hardest classes, your weighted GPA is fine, and your SAT is fine. In addition, you seem to be a stellar sprinter, so you’re far from being “just a nerd.”

In like Flint.

[In like Flynn](In Like Flynn - Meaning & Origin Of The Phrase)

In like Flynn?

I got some sat 2 scores back…do you think I might need to take some again (doing engineering btw)

Math II-720
History- 650
Literature-620

Don’t think GT looks at SAT II’s.

Georgia Tech does not consider SAT II scores. They also do not require recommendations unless you make PSP semi-finalist.

A lot of you gave me positive comments, but I starting to get worried about the fact that I am out of state male. Can I still consider this a match school? And btw I got 4’s on two ap tests i took junior year, ap us hist and ap english

With a GPA in the bottom quartile, I would call GT a reach

Burdell, earlier you say that he should be fine, no you say it is a reach, which is it?

What’s not clear?

Definitely more than a reach. Admissions person on the visit said that GT goes down to about 3.3-3.4 for gpa, but you have to be competitive in the other areas. The original poster has the class rigor, extra curriculars, and if they write a good essay they should be fine with a 3.5. However, remember the unweighted gpa is for academic classes, so some classes that you think might count for you (like tech classes!) may not. So your actual gpa may be lower than you think.

Out of state, male, etc. does not matter.

Wait a minute gadzooks. What do you mean when you say that the admissions person said that GT goes down to about 3.3-3.4 for GPA? Do you mean that’s usually the minimum GPA they will except or something else? Sorry but nothing like that was mentioned at my information session and that sounds important.

FWIW: At the recent FASET our family attended, the administration reviewed the demographics and statistics for the incoming freshman class this fall. As I recall, they stated that the average or mean (I am sorry that I don’t recall the exact wording) GPA for the incoming class was about 3.89 and the SAT scores for the same measurement were about 1390. Maybe these numbers will provide some insight for the rising seniors who are contemplating their chances with an application.

3.89 unweighted? See my school works on a weighted gpa and I know that the average kid who gets into gt from our school has a 3.75 weighted gpa (but its possible this is off because very few people apply to GT here and the data is taken from 2003 to 2009). We also have the +/- system so getting an unweighted gpa of 3.89 is harder because it requires you to get mostly A’s with some A-'s.

O and I got my AP scores back for English and US History, 4 on both. I’m not sure if/how this will help my chances any more. Do colleges care about the class or the exam?
