Can I get into Harvard?

Hey every1,

I'm gonna be a sophomore and I want to know what my chances are of getting into Harvard are with what I am currently doing. Normally, 2 or 3 kids from my school (private) each year get accepted into Harvard with many more going into other Ivy Leagues. In my freshman year, I had a 4.0 GPA with 5 honors classes. I took the ACT freshman year and scored a 32 on it without taking the essay portion.

In my sophomore year, I plan to take 3 AP's in Chemistry, Psychology, and I most likely will self study statistics. I am on my sophomore class board this year and I also participate in the school newspaper and Science Olympiad (which i will be captain of junior year). I am currently on varsity soccer and on JV Basketball this year.

Over summer, I am doing research at a spine research facility in Ohio and in later years hope to publish a paper with my name in that area of research.

I am also going to do the IB program and finish with 14 AP courses throughout high school.

I just want 2 know if this is what i do throughout high school, will i have a good chance to get into Harvard? Thanks a lot i know u get these a lot.

You will have a great chance.

Keep up the good work.

You will have a good chance. I don't know what you mean by doing the IB program with AP courses though.

Well, the IB program at my school makes u take the AP course with additional labs etc., so while I am part of the IB program, I will just sit for the AP exam seeing how I took the AP course . Keep the comments coming!

your stats look good....it might also help to be from the area to check out the school and make sure you like it....where are you from (state/school)? Also, as rude as it sounds, wats your ethnicity, as that has bearing as well.

hope ure black though

I don't think that Harvard cares as much about taking a million AP and IB exams as pursuing an interest outside of school. Maybe you should devote more of your time to the scientific research. You should also do something for the community.

Well, umm...i'm indian so hey that's a minority. I go to a private school in Michigan (same school where Steve Balmer, Robin Williams went)...I'm thinking about starting a tutor program with a few of my friends for young kids in basic science and math knowledge...for community assistance of course.

It's a minority, but it's not the right kind; Asians are overrepresented at top colleges. Unless you mean Indian as in Native American.

Your comment about starting a tutoring program doesn't sound very sincere. Are you truly interested in tutoring kids because it's something you enjoy? If you're doing it for colleges, they'll be able to tell right away.

and teaching kids is something i have enjoyed all my life and its actually been a goal of mine since i was in middle school to be able to start a tutor program.

another little fact: i went to the national spelling bee in 7th grade (Scripps Howard) and I have been a pronouncer in an Indian spelling bee for the past 2 years and have been helping kids improve their vocabulary...it is something i have enjoyed and is something i'd like to continue.

Jesus dude, are you for real? Why don't you just lie on your application like some of my friends did and they got in. That is a lot of junk to do just to get in. So my question is you are just a sophmore and you already have all this planned out and made a 32 on the act? You don't even need this thread if all of this is true. Though to be honest, I think this total bunk.

o woah hey ... i didn't lie on this i actually did get a 32 on my ACT through a program called MATS. And no, this is not "total bunk" btw. I just wanted an honest evaluation of what people thought my chances were of getting in...i'm not gonna lie about anything on an application

no no....i was class board president from soph-senior years....i also did Model UN and was pres of the club for 2 years....and i did DI.....not good at sports so that didnt run my way. I did some outside work for charities but the most importnat part I think you need to pay attentino to is not trying to fit in as many extracurrics as posisble but rather try to get a couple and do something significant with them. Do a summer program at a prominent university taking some classes. Get a few internships over the summer cause they will ask you about work experience. BUt most of all make sure all of it fits together...like i had a job with a political campaign and with the arab american institute (an organization dedicated to political stuff)...so i was able to come up with one essay about tying that to model un and politics and blah blah blah and so it all fit in a theme. also, spend a LOT of time on your essyas when you apply....but i mean your two years away from all this...just make sure when you do all your stuff it fits together in some theme....and honestly....a 4.0 and perfect test scores is NO guarentee of getting in....and not a 4.0 and imperfect test scores is not the end of your acceptance....it took me 3 tries on the SAT to get a 1480....i did well on the ACT (34). Also, dont overload urself trying to take AP's as a sophomore...i honstly find it ridiculous....ap chem as a sophomore generally hurts a lot of students who try and pull it off....easy up on it...it makes no difference if u take those classes as a junior

haha i agree with you thanx for the comments. But about the sophomore AP chem...i think i won't get overworked. this summer i took a 3 week course at northwestern on a full year of chem and i got a solid A in the class...so it would be pointless to not take AP cehm...because taking sophomore chem would be a repeat of the stuff i just learnt. If i do get overworked however i'm not gonna keep pushing i'll just drop and take it as a junior. My reasoning for taking it as a sophomore is to take 1 AP science course every year because i think it'll be extremely difficult to take 2 AP science classes with so much to demand in 1 year...while dividing the 3 main (Bio, Chem, and Physics) into each respective year would ease things up for me. About extracurrics, i'm not 100% sure wat i necessarily want to focus on (but it would probably be something in the field of biology or medicine...since that's what i'm most interested in) but ur right in the sense i still have 2 more years to go i was just curious on the path i was taking i don't think there's any harm in that...i'd probably go for class board president this year that'd be pretty cool even though its my first year as being a "leader" or assuming a leadership role at school

btw dude...is there any reason you'd want to go to Harvard over Yale, Princeton, MIT, ne of hte top schools? waht makes harvard appeal to u besides the name? like waht specifically do you want to study cause honestly as good as Harvard is...there might be something better for what you want to do (not to push you away form harvard..it is the BEST school eve :-) ).

Well...i want to go into medicine, so on the undergraduate level, i think Yale and Princeton aren't where i want to go. While MIT does have a great biomedical engineering program for preparation at med school and I know a lot of people who go there...it seems too much of a "study" school for me...where the majority of the people spend all their time on their studies...maybe my interpretation of this is wrong...but MIT just hasn't appealed to me as much as Harvard. Stanford would be a school in my mind as well...but Harvard has always been the most appealing to me...and i don't feel it to be an out of reach college for me.

tries to stab my forearm with needle Can't find the vein... must... have... more... ellipsis... crack...

o trust me i never had my hopes up dude...we've both seen kids from DCD who seemed to have the "perfect application" and haven't gotten into Harvard...being cocky about this is 1 thing i try not 2 do.

i don't think you'll get into harvard. you're just not good enough

wow you're cool immajap seriously u r the coolest person i've met
