SSAT: 87th percentile overall, 88th percentile for gender
Grades: 3.85 UW freshman year (2 A- 1 B+, All As second semester though) in highest classes, taking 2 APs sophomore year
ECs: Crew, Fishing (few awards), Gaming (competitively), and chess club
Awards: High Honors Freshman year, Honors 8th and 7th grade, AMC 1st place in 7th grade, 2nd place in 8th
If you were hoping to continue crew, hotchkiss and loomis don’t compete. That would definitely be a good EC if you’ve participated extensively and help at Exeter. Might you consider adding more schools to your list?
I need a lot of financial aid so I want to apply to schools with large endowments. The downside to this is that mostly the top prep schools have large endowments, so I don’t really have the options of applying to safeties. If you happen to know of any prep schools that are easier to get into with large endowments, I would definitely take a look.
A big endowment is no guarantee of a good FA award. Many of those FA awards are slotted for hot buckets like minorities, athletes etc. Kent has very good rowing.
What’s your 2k and I’ll let you know if you have a shot
If you’re on the taller end and are pretty invested in crew, I recommend contacting the crew coaches at the schools that have crew teams. From personal experience, if a coach is interested in you, it helps!
I’d say you have to have a hook. If you won’t be a recruited athlete, do you have other hooks such as geodiversity?
If you are casting a wide net, look at Kent. Your SSATs are a bit higher than their average and they dominate in crew. While their endowment is not has high as the above referenced schools, they offer more financial aid relative to their endowment than any school that I can think of. Almost as much as Hotchkiss which has 5X the endowment. FWIW, I have kids at Hotchkiss who had similar stats, slightly lower SSATs actually. Both have music hooks and one was a potential impact athlete.
The place where I do crew we usually only do 4Ks. After doing crew for about 6 months, my 4k is 16 minutes. Also I am 6’3’’ at 15.
I’m seconding @Temperantia on this one. Kent loves bright rowers! Best of luck
I think you have a good chance. You seem to have a good variety of interests. Just make sure you write your personal statements well. However, I would raise your SSAT scores if you have the chance. I am a tenth grader at Exeter right now and I learned that high SSAT and good grades are essential. 88 percentile is good, but you want to get in the 92-99 to be safe for schools like Exeter. I think Loomis is definitely a possibility.
For Hotchkiss, it seems they take legacy over similar qualified applicants. Are you legacy or have something they need like first chair violinist or recruited athlete?
Well SwimKid got into PA/PEA but not Loomis so saying Loomis is a definite possibility is careless. The are so many factors. And financial aid is a MAJOR one!
