Can I get started early with essays?

I was looking on the common app website at Standford’s application and all that they have there is short essays and the personal statement for the common app. Maybe I’m just not looking in the right place? Will they release more essays soon, and, if so, where would I be able to find the release date for essays for different colleges? Also, does anyone know what other essays I should expect from Stanford?

Here are the essays from Stanford’s website http://admission.stanford.edu/application/freshman/essays.html

The page was last update in 2015, so keep in mind these might change. However, even if they do change you will likely to be able to edit your essays fairly easily to fit the prompts.

As for “essay release dates” that will vary by college. In general, just look up “School Name freshman admission essay” on google and you should find the most recent or current years’ essays. I’d imagine most schools will use their prompts from last year or update their websites by mid-August.

Even if you don’t know all the schools you are applying to, I suggest writing a few rough drafts or jotting down some ideas on different topics/experiences from your life. Virtually any essay can be used for any prompt with just a few edits, so if you do some drafting now, you’ll be all set for when you apply to schools in the fall.

Summer is the best time to get the essays done. It will take a lot of pressure off you in the fall.

The common application right now should have all of the essays, including supplements, that colleges asked for in the past admissions round. Look through them, start brainstorming. Prompts like “write a note to your future roommate” or “describe an extracurricular” will more than likely appear again this year. Also, check out the schools’ websites and look at past years’ prompts. If the prompts haven’t changed for five years now, there’s a large chance they will stay the same for this next admissions round.

Listen to me now and hear me later…you will feel like a god if you have done your essays in the summer once you get back to HS and are taking tough courses and doing all your ECs and applying to colleges.

Future you will thank present you.

Yeah, starting essays now seems like a very good idea.

@sophie9999 Thanks for the help!

I am a little confused about the Stanford essays. Is the only long one the personal statement for the common app and then the rest are short essays? I’d thought there would be more long essays

You’re correct, it’s only the long common app essay and three short essays (unless of course they update it for this years applicants, which is unlikely).

If you really like long essays, @cameronalexis , then you do not what to apply to MIT LOLOL.
