Can I improve my CR from a 560ish to a 680ish if I read classical books for 1 year?

please people i need your responses......

My personal suggestion is to get a student subscription to The New Yorker Magazine.....it is more fun, interesting and comes every week....to your house where the cover and cartoons will continually inspire you to continue reading.
The writing is high quality and you will gain much from a year of reading this rag.

any other suggestions?

i got 610 on the PSAT & 740 on the June SAT. Practice tests are the key. Newspapers and magazines such as the New Yorker are the next best bet.

The New York Times is a newspaper, The New York Post is a newspaper......The New Yorker Magazine is just that a weekly magazine.

www.newyorker.com/

Oh but you see, I'm not a great reader. Also, Since the past year, I've been preparing by doing practice problems (LOTS OF THEM). But still, my score has remained about the same. Only a 50 point difference after 6 months of rigorous prepping.

So I wanted people's outlook on Classical Books because i dont want to acquaint myself with magazines and newspapers. So Has anyone seen improvements in his/her score after reading classical books extensively??

IF you have, please let me know because I'm very anxious to know if after reading classical books for one year, my CR score will improve.

Thank You.

I think that you don't understand what The New Yorker is but that is another discussion. You asked about what to read to help.......Classics yes, any reading should help. I am trying once again to tell you that the topics, quality of writing and vocabulary in The New Yorker are what you are looking for. If you choose to disgard this publication as "a magazine" then you are the one who is losing out.....I have read it every week for 10 years and I did just fine on my exams.

Your local newspaper, TIME and a million other books will all do the job. Now go and read.

Watch good movies with thick plots. I'm not kidding. I'm in the 750-range on CR, I think/hope.

wow you read it every week for 10 yearS???

what did you score on the CR?

and also, say I read it every week, I only have 2 years to improve my score.... so since it took u 10 years worth of reading the new yorker, 2 years of reading it wont help that much??

also, what section is the best to read from then new yorker?

I learned English five and a half years ago, and I have been reading TIME et cetera for the past three. I scored 720 on the CR on my first try. You can do just as well. Now go and read!

You have two years which is plenty of time. My ten years of reading The New Yorker does not say that mastering the skill took ten years.....a slightly different meaning in what I said.

The sections are all interesting but the main point is that all are well written and there is a variety of interests.....threrein lies the magic. You may find yourself reading on topics you would not ordinarily be exposed to. For example some is humor, some is current events, some is sports, some is personal stories, some is fiction some is factual. ALL is written with great vocabulary and style. Some pieces are long some are very short. I usually carry it with me......it is fairly easy to hold and I read when I am waiting or traveling.....say on the car, train etc. I love the drawings and I have kept up on current events and become interested in authors I would not have been exposed to other than through The New Yorker. Some issues are devoted to Food or Humor or Fiction.....it is quite variable. I do hope you try it and circle words you don't know....go back and look them up sometime. I know you will enjoy it.....once you get an issue in your hands.

One short piece: http://www.newyorker.com/printables/fiction/050919fi_fiction

You could read other magazines that are similar to the New Yorker, too. Try Harper's, the Atlantic Monthly, etc.
Really, any quality printed material should be helpful.

Good luck!

I also read The Atlantic Monthly.....but to a person who is not so familiar I usually recommend what I did as it has long, short and many different subjects plus the cartoons and drawings. I think the cartoons are good for someone who is trying to become fluent and also beginning readers.....the vocab is always tremendously variable. Good points though on these others also Harpers.

wow you learned english almost 6 years ago?? same here.

Oh ok so from now onwards, I will read tons of classical books and New Yorker and take a practice test after 6 months and see if I can break 650 for the first TIME!!!!!

Mark the words you aren't sure about....big circle and eventually you will get better. The cartoons are good.....if you have trouble understanding at first ask someone.....soon you will get it all. Enjoy and have a positive attitude. From The New Yorker you will also learn some of American culture which helps on exams.

My friend reads all the time, and instead of using a bookmark, he uses a small slip of paper on which he writes words he's not sure of, so that he can look them up when he has a dictionary handy.

Hazmat, I think the New Yorker thing is a really good idea.

Aw, I love reading.

I sometimes use a blowin....the cards in magazines that drive 'ya crazy. Anyway I have done that or write a quote or author that I found attractive or interesting....or both. Anyway I love reading too. I also love humor and my greatest personal joy every week is the art work on the cover of The New Yorker. My private moment of can I guess the subject the title as it were?! Sounds goofy I know but it is a moment for me every week for years. A free of all stress not matter what else is going on moment of pure joy for me. Thanks for the comments.

thanks guys for the comments........would it be good enough if i can just read for 1 hr/daily due to the 3-4 hrs of hw that i get everyday?

also: i want to read for 2-3 hrs daily, in which case i will have to go to sleep at 2 am or 1am everday and wake up at 7 am......would that be fine? only getting 5-6 hrs of sleep?
