So at the end of last year I got the "ok" from two of my teachers to write letters of recommendation for me. One's a History teacher, head of the IB program at our school, who knows me 2nd best out of all my teachers. The second's an English teacher who knows me the best.
Over the summer I decided that I want to do engineering. So, would it be ok to use the English and History recs to schools where I don't have to specify engineering on the application, and get a rec from a math teacher to schools where I DO have to specify engineering on the application? E.G. Columbia. I don't want to not come to my History teacher because I needed two recs and I think another teacher knows me better ...

It should be fine if you talk to your college counselor. Usually they’re in charge of sending the recs, so you can specify with them.

Also, I’m applying to Stanford EA. And they don’t know that I want to do engineering from my application so I don’t need to worry about getting a LOR from a math or science teacher for that right?

I believe so. My college counselor tells us to try to have one LOR from a humanities/social science teacher and one LOR from a math/science teacher as default for all apps. But then again, the college counseling at my school kinda blows, so who knows.

Hmm… I’ll talk to my counselor about that. I don’t think it really matters as long as they are from different subjects but I could be wrong. My math teacher is the nicest guy ever but I don’t have the strongest relationship with him because the math and science curricula at my school don’t have a lot of student teacher interaction in them…

Yeah I think I’m going to research that as well, since 3 of my teachers wrote recs, and I suspect that the best were from my Latin and Drama teachers, while the rec from my Physics teacher is probably decent, but not superb.
