Can I still get into Carnegie Mellon without visiting?

I live 5 hours away from the school. I am applying regular decision. I will have an interview with alumni from Carnegie Mellon.

On their website, Carnegie Mellon says that visiting will really help your application. Am I at a disadvantage if I don’t visit but get an interview?

Thanks

My son also lives 5 hours away. He did the alumni interview in our local area, and got in regular decision with a presidential scholarship. After admission, he visited and they raised his scholarship offer. He is a freshman there now.

@christopher8956 . Not visiting won’t impact your chances. Do visit if you get admitted, though. Good luck!

I disagree with @JonathanK about not visiting not impacting your chances- CMU’s Common Data Set indicates that demonstrated interest is “Important”- as much as essays and recommendations! While this is not limited to just visiting, OP will have to think about how they’re expressing interest- alumni interview is definitely good, but staying in contact with admissions, signing up for mailing lists, etc. will help.

Do try to visit if you can- it will help.

Correction @hope469: 2017/18 Common Data Set states demonstrated interest is no longer considered.
